About this listen

A gripping, full-cast science-fiction drama for fans of time travel, conspiracy theories, and unexplained phenomena.

In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes.

Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

But is Earth safe? Could the Vanishing happen again?

To get answers, two teams are launched back in time–one to New York City before the Vanishing; another to follow a bizarre trail of clues through history, from Area 51 to the lost Roanoke colony, and beyond.

There are forces, though, that don’t want the Temporal mission to succeed. And a mysterious being whose own agenda might destroy them all.

This is truly a masterpiece of storytelling. It requires some focus, but the characters and setting are amazing. The sound design is a marvel and overall this was one of the best (if not the best) audio dramas I’ve ever heard. Thank you!

A magnificent ride

Phenomenal story that is immersion and keeps you on your toes. The story builds up from the start and picking up on every hint to the ending on a second listen just makes it even better. Also a brilliant commentary on our life these days when it comes to how we interact with technology, what we could do with it in the future, and what it could mean for us all. The cast is in top form and delivers stellar performances. Came for Nicola Walker and Julian Simpson, stayed for the mind blowing work that it is as a whole. The composer has done a phenomenal job, too. I've enjoyed his compositions in The Lovecraft Investigations and was delighted to recognise his style when I was listening.

Tume travel sci-fi at it's best

I was extremely excited about this title just because it ties in my love of time travel stories, with my life long interest in unexplained events and conspiracy theories. But the way this story is woven together is genius storytelling. I planned on listening to just the first couple of chapters and ended up going to bed at 3am after I had listened to the whole story. I cannot recommend it enough. The sound effects and acting really bring this extraordinary story to life.

Have enjoyed a lot of this teams work, and this was another enjoyable investigation & mystery with added time travel complication

Really enjoyable time travelling head twister

Loved this, a little confusing at times but relistening to the last episode helped unpick all the threads. Clever and engaging. Julian and his voice team are great, love the Lovecraft investigations and Pleasant Green universe. Here's hoping they've found a new home on Audible.

Classic Julian Simpson

A great time-bending audio-drama, with some good voice acting. The story takes a bit to take hold, but the pacing and conclusion is really good.

Hands up: I am a big fan of Julian Simpson's work so I was very excited when this appeared on Audible. I would gladly have paid to listen to it btw! Totally enjoyed the story. The sound scapes are excellent and make the whole thing very emersive. Definitely one for listening on headphones! Had to pay close attention to the slowly unraveling narrative (anything but linear!) delivered by some great voices (tho Jana will always be Kennedy Fisher to me...). I know this is starting to sound like I am paid to write a rave review: honestly I am not. It's just a really excellent audio play!!!

Audio sci-fi at its Best!

Amazing production, amazing sound-design, a suitably messy but coherent plot (time travel is always a mess, but the way it's handled here is perfect - the stakes are never diminished). Very much like Simpson's previous works, revolving around found-audio, on-location recording, mysteries, betrayals - it's all there, it's all fantastic. Stellar and familiar cast - I'd love to hear whatever the next thing is.

Julian Simpson is the master of audio

Brilliant story, actors and high production values. I have enjoyed all Julian Simpsons work and this is no exception. I recommend any new listeners to catch up with the Lovecraft Investigations, Aldrich Kemp and the standalone Pleasant Green stories. If you enjoyed this story you will be in for a treat.

Fantastic as always

Like listening to a film with way more detail and as it’s twice as long made sense
