About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From the moment Dr J. Doyle takes lodgings in Baker Street with the angel Crow, he becomes intimately acquainted with the supernatural and criminal worlds of London.

But living with a rogue angel is not so easy; the pair find themselves drawn into mystery after mystery, from a man kidnapped by a vampire nest to Jack the Ripper's horrific murders.

And besides Doyle's nightmares and shapeshifting, there is the lingering problem of Crow's sense of belonging and the worry that he might Fall....

First off, I hardly ever leave reviews. If you put Sherlock and Watson through the multiverse clothes wringer, this is what you'd get. No actual Holmes or Watson but who they might be in a universe of angels, vampires and revenants. But it has the absolute feel of the original Sherlock stories. Some of the original Sherlock Holmes tales are shaken into slightly different tales with a nod here and there to Doyle. I usually hate the Dracula, Hyde etc combine with Sherlock type stories but this was very good. I listened to the sample by accident and couldn't stop listening. And more of the same please.

Sherlock and Watson, through a glass darkly - loved it. More please.

I had to make that that headline as this engaging yarn is being briliantly performed - but I am sure the publishers have issued it at a reduced speed to inflate the length. At normal speed it is unbearable. at 1.2 it is ok. at 1.45 is is a brillaintly performed, humerous and enjoyable melodrama. Ignore those who said the performance is bad - just set the reading to a speed that suits you and I guarantee satisfaction.

Brillaint performance when at the correct speed

What a wonderful fantasy remix of the Holmes stories. It's like wrapping yourself in a familiar blanket at the end of a long cold day. The skeleton of the stories stay the same as the original but the meat is fresh and adds a new and delicious world to explore. I can't recommend this highly enough. I love that Addison took the long running theory and followed it through, weaving into it her boundless imagination.

I agree with one review that said the story was best listened to at 1.5 speed. Otherwise the narration is painfully slow. I only listen to books I have read and loved, and I really love this mix of the paranormal and Sherlock Holmes.

I loved the Elflands books and was eager for more. This one had a vaguely Sherlock Holmesy feel and I wasn't keen so I took a while to get round to it. I could not have loved this book more.
Easy to read and eagerly devoured! Such imagination, all so marvellously told, and very well narrated. If I had been a Sherlock Holmes fan, I might have caught even more of those references. I loved the two principal characters and found them both fascinating.
A great read!

Really like the author's other works and am a sherlock Holmes fan so had to give this a go. the world building was amazing and added a good twist to the stories. I had seen other negative reviews about the narration but found I liked the more dramatic reading and distinct voices the character had, it reminded me of the older Holmes series. The ending did seem a little abrupt but was satisfying overall, definitely going to be one I go back to.

a fun listen

Katherine Addison has a great gift for inventing new worlds, that are both familiar and fantastical, even here recreating Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s world. I first read her ‘The Goblin Emperor’ two years ago and have read it and listened to it more times than I can count. Again with this she writes a brilliant story, peopled by great characters, that keeps you riveted till the end, and immediately wanting more.

An imaginative retelling.

this was brilliant re-imagining of some classic stories. Beautiful performance bringing all of the characters alive (even the dead ones), loved it

fantastic

a nice take on an old classic. I enjoyed the twists and liked the way current topics and issues were addressed.

I feel like if you like Sherlock both the original stories and the modern adaptation you will adore this. But I also feel like you might not appreciate this if you don't know the original Sherlock stories at all.

Fans of Sherlock will either love or hate this.
