Summary

A pioneering cardiac surgeon expertly sews up the heart of surgery, the health of the nation, and the NHS.

The Angina Monologues speeds from the transporting of a donor’s heart up the motorway hard shoulder, to cautionary stories of excessive intervention gone awry in US hospitals, to a traumatic trip to bring advanced cardiac surgery to the Palestinian West Bank. Nashef tells heart-stopping stories of transplants, coronary artery bypasses, aorta repair and cardiac arrest. He also delivers humane advice about medical realities rarely observed: the futility of obsessing over diet, the necessity of calculating risks, the role of decision making, the resilience of doctor and patient alike and the threadbare brilliance of the NHS.

Nashef is a magnificently warm and likeable doctor and writer, and he has the best imaginable bedside manner.

Well written and well delivered

I enjoyed listening to this book very much. The stories are conveyed with clarity and respect. I was kept interested through out. The narration was also a delight to listen to.

The Author's honesty about the state of the NHS.

Great book for medical voyeurs! I love the way the author dissected medical terms into everyday language.

Heart Surgery Made Easy

I never imagined I would find a book on heart surgery so unputdownable, humane and deeply moving. Samer Nashef is not just an obviously brilliant surgeon but a compelling writer. He cares deeply about his patients and has that rare attribute for a doctor, humility. I am just amazed that this book is not better known.
I have not been so deeply impressed by any book for a very long time. I have bought 3 copies of the paperback version for friends and family who don't listen to audiobooks. I want everyone to know that if we need heart surgery, it is much simpler than we imagine.
The narrator is first rate too and makes it easy to imagine he is actually Samer himself.

Fascinating!

I have a morbid interest in medical stories and, as a heart patient myself, I found this audio book fascinating! He is descriptive to the point where it almost feels like you're witness to the events told. He certainly doesn't shy away from detail and isn't scared to point out his own errors. No holds barred. A brilliant purchase!

Excellent narration of a fascinating and inspiring book

I’ve always had an interest in the human body and this book ticked that box and so very much more. It’s funny and thought provoking. Samer Nashef’s writing made me feel like I could achieve anything - you don’t have to be a superhero. I’m now going back to the beginning to listen to it a second time.

Extremely entertaining.

I loved this. Downloaded it when I was stuck in hospital with my son who was having open heart surgery. I thought it might be educational. I'm
glad I waited to listen, as some of the stories were a bit confronting (for our situation).
It was not overly technical, so anyone can follow. The stories are interesting, thrilling, often humorous and occasionaly relatable. The author is very open and honest about his background, disasters, as well as successes. I could listen to the narrator speak all day. Highly recommend.
