Four hundred years separate them.

One book binds them.

Glasgow 2024: Clem waits by her daughter’s hospital bed. Erin was found on an idyllic beach in Fynhallow Bay, Orkney, with catastrophic burns and only one memory: her name is Nyx.

But how did she get these burns? And how did her boyfriend end up burned alive?

Orkney 1594: accused of witchcraft, Alison Balfour awaits trial. The punishment? To be burned alive.

Separated by four hundred years but bound by the Book of Witching, two women stand imperilled. Can they unlock a centuries-old mystery? And will Fynhallow Bay give up its secrets before someone else dies?

I love the magic and underlying creepiness of CJ Cooke’s books. By creepy I mean the underlying tales that she weaves in & builds up.
Always fabulous narrators. I prefer listening to these mainly for the narrators I won’t lie. But reading them is great too.

Fab

A really good story line which was linked to factual events. Could have been a bit more spooky but overall a good listen.

The story was gripping

I found this audiobook an easy listen. It's quite well written & I enjoyed the Scottish Islands aspect. There are parts of the story I felt could have been developed more, but overall it was an entertaining listen.

Easy Listening.

I recently discovered CJ Cooke by chance. I have been looking for a book for a long time on the subject of historical witches and CJ Cooke has delivered everything I was looking for.

The Book of Witching is a perfect story for an autumn / winter evening. Its spooky, historical and makes you think about how much we've changed in the past few hundred years.

The only fault I can find is the narrator - as I listen to these with my headphones on I could hear every breath, her swallowing, her voice breaking slightly, heavier breathing etc and its was so off putting. None of the other books I've listened to have bothered me like this one.

Another Amazing Story from CJ Cooke

A cleverly woven tale following 2 separate storylines, which are merged at the end, lifting the fog and revealing their connection, bringing the story full circle.

Great narration and depiction of the characters, enabled great visualisation and brought the story to life. Enjoyable listen.

intriguing story and characters

A fantastic book, has some decent twists in it too and keeps you hooked. I'm also a big fan of the history of the witch trials, but how these women suffered doesn't bear thinking about.

Nobody does Witches like the Scots!

This was a spellbinding tale which weaved between magic, family love, tragedies and the pagen arts throughout the centuries. An atmospheric story, perfect for October. Beautiful written and fabulous read. I couldn't stop listening, I just needed to know the outcome of Alison and Erin and their collective families. I will not hesitate to read/listen to another CJ Cooke novel.

A perfect Autumnal read
