Summary

They made the rules. She's going to break them.

When Alex Vogel gets a new job working at a corporate Manhattan law firm, she thinks all her dreams have come true. The pay checks are huge, the work is exciting and the drinks are flowing every Friday night.

But underneath the glossy veneer of the company, dark secrets are lurking. Her colleagues disappear into the bathroom for hits of cocaine, the partners sleep under their desks (if they sleep at all) and the firm's biggest client sexually harasses a string of women, none of whom will speak up. Alex soon realises that in order to fit in, she needs to become one of the boys - and turn a blind eye to what goes on. She needs to join in. But as her life begins to spiral out of control, Alex realises - the boys' club is a dangerous place to be....

A brilliant, topical coming-of-age novel that gives a voice to women in the world of corporate law.

Performance sometimes made me wince!

How can you take a story seriously, as this very good story deserves, when so many characters are spoken with little girl/baby doll voices (ugh!). We are asked to believe that even senior members of the "biggest law firm in the world" talk in voices not unlike my 4-year old granddaughter's voice. It is difficult to listen to so many female voices that are high-pitched to the point of incredulity. This unattractive casting of female characters is becoming more prevalent especially states-side. I cannot resist asking - does this exacerbate the Me-too movement, the highly polarized female and male characteristics. Where are the serious women with normal voices?

well-written

This was an excetionally well written novel making a good attempt at illustrating how difficult it can be for a woman in the corporate law world (in the US)
The heroine was incredibly ambitious and was extremely good at her job. She used her looks and cleverness with clients which helped her make inroads in the firm as a new graduate. She loves the monetary rewards but this eventually alienates her boyfriend who she lives with. Her drinking and drug use increases but is not necessarily out of control. However one particular client is extremely offensive and assaults her. She supports a member of his staff who brought an action against him. However they did not win their case.
. In the end her work is what defines her as she has sacrificed everything else

An enjoyable book

I enjoyed this book. The storyline is good and kept my attention. I liked the narrator, she portrayed the characters really well and I thought her accents for each came across very well.
