About this listen

The Wicked Witch of Whitby vs. the Bride of Frankenstein.

Meet the good, the bad and the bitten... Something is biting people on the streets of Whitby. In an ordinary town, this would be worrying. Here, it's disastrous, and only Brenda has guessed why.

She's also trying to prepare for a packed festive break at her B&B, but her best friend Effie is in distracted mood: she hasn't been the same since her suave gentleman friend Alucard reappeared.

Meanwhile, Penny has joined a book group in the new mystery bookstore, the Spooky Finger. As she is drawn into the strange and fantastic works of Edwardian lady novelist Beatrice Mapp, she makes some surprising discoveries. Discoveries that will soon impact upon the lives of all the ladies of Whitby.

When unexpected help from the shadows of the past arrives to illuminate the dangers awaiting them all, Brenda realises that unless she can find a way to save Effie, the consequences may be eternal.

The story is quite convoluted and jumps about a bit, also for me e accents were not treat, i think Joanna Tope does a great job, but the choice of voices were grating a bit... But thats just my opinion, it shouldn't stop you listening.

Great story but jumps about a bit

I adore these adventures with Brenda, Effie and the team. They take you into another world, well, several, that are as bonkers as they are marvellous. Full of larger than life characters and ingenious adventures. Utterly eccentric and yet touching. Very modern but also quaint and retro. And, despite the unbounded eccentricity, the characters inspire genuine attachment and investment. These books transport you to distant lands in the company of gorgeous ghouls. Beautifully read by the narrator, so vividly that you feel you are listening to a dramatisation. Just magic.

An absolute hoot! Unique and wonderful!

The further incredible adventures of Whitby’s favourite two guardians - Brenda and Effie. Monster adventures with a touch of proper northern humour and plenty of time for a fish supper.

These stories have got me through these lockdowns and kept me thoroughly entertained!!

Simply wonderful, duckie

Love this whole series, the wit and the sly mangling of tropes, the soap operatic rows and bubbling, bungling passions. And behind the curtain a well read intelligence bright eyed, like a mad scientist pulling threads out of so many genres it makes your head spin. Bravo.

A voyage through genres and beyond.

I’ve been a big Brenda & Effie fan for the last year but this has been my least favourite. It jumps around a bit & every time i sat down to it I had to go back a bit to get my bearings. Also there are a few “mistakes” i.e bits where the narrator mis-reads & then corrects. It wasn’t as totally distracting as the plot.
That said, I love Joanna Tope’s reading - she does bring these beloved characters “alive” 😉

Jumps around but these are Beloved characters

It's not the best of the books so far - Effie is particularly unpleasant and the multiple narration gaffs (why didn't they remove those?) are a bit jarring. The story jumps back and forth but ultimately comes to a "Back to the Future" conclusion that leads right into the final novel. Still a great series but a slight slump is all.
