Summary

Jessica Clarke had been set alight 20 years ago. Her attacker, quickly tracked down and eager to confess, is still in jail, his career as a hitman for North London gangs now well behind him. So who is harassing Carol Chamberlain, the arresting officer, and claiming that he is one who burned the girl?

Now retired, Carol turns to DI Tom Thorne for help. Thorne is up to his neck investigating a series of killings which appear to be the result of a turf war between rival gangs, and he's fed up to the gills with reporting to DCI Tughan, so helping Carol out looks like a good deed in a naughty world. Only the world is about to turn much nastier, so nasty in fact that he finds himself longing for a straightforward psycopath to hunt down.

This is a powerful work, exploring the effects of violence and greed on the lives of those who exploit their fellow beings.

Different and just OK

I am not a big fan of changing Narrator in a series of novels, especially when there seems no need to. that said this was well read.

I do take objection to the seemingly pointless musical interludes which had no affect on the drama or performance as a whole. not that the producers of these thing read these reviews of course.

Good book but annoying voice

Compared to other books in the series, the narrator in this one was annoying to listen to and it took away from my enjoyment of the story. There were no other versions on offer and I wanted to listen to the books in order so I persevered but was left wishing I had read it instead. The storyline was good but I tuned out at times and fell asleep at times as the narrator just didn’t appeal.

unfair to complain about the narrator, but...

I found it difficult to focus on the story as it sounded like it was being narrated by Trigger from only fools, the I discovered that it was , bless him. A great actor, but has such a distinctive voice it was over powering.

Good story.

Not my favourite in the series. Probably because it was abridged and felt disjointed in places.
I didn't much care for the narration. Once it occurred to me that the guy sounded like Trigger from Only Fools and Horses it got in the way for me.
Overall an okay listen.

Not the best

This one was a bit of a slog. I like these books but this one wasn't very good.

Good story

Great story, but unnecessary music between chapters. I miss the authors narrative, the reading feels flat.

Abridged and it showed

Billingham's prose reads well. It flows. Having finished this book yesterday, I somehow felt cheated as though something was missing... and then I realised the book had been abridged. Please don't.

Disappointing

I’ve really enjoyed the previous books in this series but found this one a bit disappointing. I can’t decide whether it was the narrator, who I found really irritating!, or a combination of poor narration and not great storyline.

another great book but....

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

After purchasing the books from 1 to 5 slightly out of sequence i found burning girl the most difficult to engage with. This had nothing to do with the content but everything to do with the narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

After being spoiled by Robert glenister narrating the other books I've listened to, i found Roger Lloyd Pack's narration dull and monotone. The performance distracted me from fully enjoying the book. I have re-listened to the other 4 books many times but can't bring myself to suffer the narration again. This is no reflection on the narrator really as Robert Glennister is superb as Thorne.

Another good book from Mark Billingham

Unlike many of the reviewers I didn't mind the reader but I do prefer the author. Not as good as some of his books but still worth a listen to. I definitely didn't like the weird music.
