Summary

The terrifying new Hammer novella by Minette Walters, best-selling author of The Sculptress and The Scold's Bridle.

Muna’s fortunes changed for the better on the day that Mr and Mrs Songoli’s younger son failed to come home from school. Before then her bedroom was a dark, windowless cellar, her activities confined to cooking and cleaning. She’d grown used to being maltreated by the Songoli family, to being a slave. She’s never been outside, doesn’t know how to read or write, and cannot speak English. At least that’s what the Songolis believe.

But Muna is far cleverer - and her plans more terrifying - than the Songolis or anyone else can ever imagine....

Interesting until the end…

This was a good listen over all, but the ending was sudden and a bit daft. Minette Walters can write a good twist but this one was well short of the mark and a bit of an anticlimax. Narration was good but not enough to pull up the overall rating.

Improbable plot. My least favourite by Walters

Would you try another book written by Minette Walters or narrated by Sara Powell?

Yes, but if this was the first I've read, I'd not be encouraged to read more.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Unbelievable. But not in a good way.

What three words best describe Sara Powell’s performance?

Ok.

Any additional comments?

Very contrived and lacks suspense.
