Critic reviews

"Since he received an Audie nomination for Volume I and an Audie Award for Volume II, it’s not surprising that Charlton Griffin gives another extraordinary performance in this volume of Sherlock Holmes works. In addition to impeccable interpretations of familiar characters - Holmes, Watson, Mycroft, and Lestrade - Griffin creates remarkably believable women. Griffin’s narration is fresh, flawless, and completely winning." (AudioFile magazine)

American narrating doesn’t know UK places!

The stories cannot be faulted as after all this is why you would by the book. The short stories are nice for a change. The only annoying thing about this book is the narrator. His voice is ok by he must-pronounces places in UK like Reading and Berkshire! Surely a little research would have not gone amiss here...

Don't let annoyed British Reviewers put you off.

What did you like most about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes?

The Narrator. And I was really surprised by all those Britons who gave negative reviews to the narrator. He is doing a really good job in keeping the stories vivid. Why on earth should the narrator be native to England? Why? I understand that, since Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson resided in London and most of the adventures take place in England, it would be silly to choose a narrator, who speaks like a cowboy from Texas or like a Glaswegian cab driver, to give voice to the main characters. But it isn't so. Instead, an awarded narrator is chosen, who really produces a great result in helping the listener's imagination to follow the adventure. And OK... he probably pronounces some words in a way unfamiliar to English people... So what? I doubt that another narrator, born and raised in London for example, would do a better job in keeping the story alive for me. He would speak with the right accent, alright... but I don't care...i'm Greek. I'm sure Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did not intend his stories to please only Britons.

Awful narration

I don't want to repeat what has been said here many times, so I will simply say that the poor narration is very off-putting.

Almost the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes

What did you like most about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes?
It's complete and unabridged so little irrelevant snippets of information usually cut from the abridged version are interesting and new.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Charlton Griffin?
Personally I think that native English speakers should be used for English works, just as American speakers should be used for American works.

Any additional comments?
I bought this audio book the other month. It does have all the Sherlock Holms stories, over 70 hours. The only problem is that the reader is American and obviously comes from the same part of England as Dick Van Dyke. I half expected him to have Holmes saying something like " It's quite obvious Watson, Colonel Morston was shot in the eye with a rare tropical poisoned dart. He died of um diddle um diddle um diddle eye"
Also listening to the appalling pronunciation at first was annoying, but later amusing in the extreme. The perilous boat chase down the "River Tims" or that well known city of Prog in the Check Republic, or as it should be pronounced, by him at least as the Chock Repobolick . I can understand the American pronunciation differing slightly, but he pronounced it wrongly on more than one occasion.
The unforgettable electronic allarm going off halfway through "A study in scarlet"
The other thing is that he only has one forign accent, slightly Irish with Indian undertones. So no mater weather they are Russian, or Greek they all have a slight Irish brogue.

A good listen on a rainy day...

The stories cannot be faulted, Conan Doyle is simply brilliant. The narration is very good, but the weak performance of the regional and foreign accents lets the recording down a bit.

Brilliant narration!

I love this complete collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures! Great narration and I enjoyed the small musical interludes. Perfect escapism from the stresses of the modern world.

Great familiar stories, abysmal delivery

The familiarity of the stories, their pace and content are the good things, the dreadful thing is Charlton Griffin's reading - just started Plutarch's Parallel Lives of the Romans and Greeks and thought I recognised the bizarre pace and pronunciation.

Multiple different pronunciations of the same name

What did you like best about The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes? What did you like least?

The stories are great, first time I've heard them.
The reader pronouncing Lestrade in the first story correctly and then in a future story pronouncing it another way entirely.

Would you be willing to try another one of Charlton Griffin’s performances?

No, not in a million years.

Do you think The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No because it is the COMPLETE stories of Sherlock Holmes, a follow-up would be more stories thus making this INCOMPLETE.

Any additional comments?

No.
