About this listen

Dom Joly enters the strange land of conspiracies as a wide-eyed tourist, eager to investigate the origins of some of the most pervasive conspiracy theories and meet the people who believe them.

Conspiracy theories are starting to become so much more than the obsession of fringe individuals. A survey by New Science magazine found that the percentage of people believing in one or more conspiracies had risen from 15% twenty years ago to 35% per cent last year. They are shaping politics, media, the way we view life itself.

In The Conspiracy Tourist Dom Joly sets out to find out where these ideas come from and learn about the people who create and believe them. His travels take him underground with followers of QAnon, to Roswell and the sites of mass shootings, and to the ends of the earth as he tests out Flat Earth theory. Along the way he talks to psychologists and specialists who analyse indoctrination, and considers what harm these movements might do to our increasingly uncertain future.

But what if these people Joly has long dismissed as crazed loonies actually have a point? What if we are the sheeple and they do have some special insight into the great issues of our time?

Firstly to say that Dom is my favourite author by far and I’ve loved all his work but this is just good, I found the book a little disjointed in places, content was great and then weak, he pulls it off no problem as his skills in reading and entertainment are as good as ever but measured to his previous work there’s something missing.
If your a fan of Doms like me I would recommend you listen as your be happy to back into the world of Jolly, if your a first time Dom reader I would say go back a bit to make the most.

Another brilliantly read book from Dom just not quite as good as the others.

Having been to the less remote places discussed, this was a fascinating alternative viewpoint!

Reviews need to be 15 words minimum, really?!

Excellent.

Quite a tedious listen if I'm honest. I thought this would be fun and interesting, maybe some interviews and arguments of people who actually believed in the conspiracies. However, this wasn't that at all. Too many times throughout, Dom reverted to speak to a pretend animal to get points across. Overall it was ok.

Lack of interviews and arguments with people who believed in conspiracies.

Dom Joly has one of those voices I could listen to for hours, so my only complaint is this book wasn’t long enough, i might re listen on half speed. The conspiracy Tourist is an interesting, thought provoking and entertaining journey into the world of ‘free thinkers’ Dom has a way of brining characters to life and keeping you entertained, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and struggled to put it down.

Dom heads down the rabbit hole

Dom Jolly is a wonderful writer and his voice brings the book to life. Witty, funny , with serious undertone in parts.

It is excellent the way that Mr Joly gently reveals how conspiracy theories are not true but that if you believe then you cannot let it go.

Is the truth out there?
