About this listen

Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.

Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.

Jenny Starling is working at The Spindlewood Inn for the weekend. It’s hosting a Regency Extravaganza, involving historical costume, amateur dramatics and food.

Leading actress of the amateur dramatic society and reputed man-eater Rachel Norman portrays a doomed noblewoman. But when she turns up actually drowned in the pond, there’s suddenly a murder to investigate. There’s been plenty of trouble at the idyllic country inn. The performers weren’t a happy troupe, and Jenny discovers a simmering romantic tension.

Who wanted Rachel dead and why? Jenny Starling is going to need all her wits to crack this complex case.

This is the seventh in a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the very end.

Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey and J. R. Ellis.

I thought the story was brilliant and the person who read this had a lively clear voice

Story well written, but narrator needs a bit energy. Only listen to it when I wanted fall asleep.

Good, but narrator flat line

A good story nicely read. So many twists and turns and suggestions that you just have to keep listening.

Beautifully plotted and written

A pleasant but undemanding listen, suitable for background listening while doing something else. The main character is likeable but not entirely believable and the plot was just about interesting enough to hold the listeners attention and the conclusion was acceptable but it pushed the bounds of credibility.

Nice but bland

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this was English rather than American. The narrator had a clear, clipped voice. I am not sure that she pronounced the Welshman 's name correctly but she read well. The scene setting was satisfactory but it seemed an age before anything happened. I kept expecting some kind of culinary mishap, but nothing. Eventually, there was a death. This was then followed by an overlong introspection by the main character. At this point I gave up.

Began well but became tedious. Gave up.

What a boring book! I ended up skipping from chapter 9 to 13. I have enjoyed the other books in this series but this one is a dud. Never been a great fan of the narrator’s style but it’s passable if you speed it up a bit. I wish Faith Martin would stop using the term “superior officer” when it should be “senior officer” but that’s a minor niggle. My advice is to give this book a miss.

Soooo boring……unbelievably slow

great and gripping

In this book you really feel that you get to know each of the chapters, and all their little foibles. I picked most of them as the murderer at one time or the other, but the reveal was still a big surprise. Very well written and brilliantly narrated.

A great listen with wonderful characters
