About this listen
But journalist Gil Peck is a lone voice worrying it can't last. Deep in the plumbing of the financial system, he has noticed strange things happening which could threaten the whole economy. But nobody wants to hear it: not the politicians taking credit for an end to boom and bust, not the bankers pocketing vast bonuses, not even Gil's bosses at the BBC, who think it's irrelevant.
When Gil gets a tip-off that a small northern bank has run out of money, everything changes. His report sparks the first run on a UK bank in 140 years. The next day, Marilyn Krol, a director of the Bank of England dies in an apparent suicide.
For Gil, it's personal. Marilyn was his lover: was his scoop connected to her suicide? Or is there something more sinister in her death?©2023 Robert Peston (P)2023 Bonnier Books UK

Fast paced plot with twists and turns
I was not expecting to like this but I was quickly hooked on the storyline which gave both interesting insights into broadcasting, politics and the banking sector.

Really good listen
This book confirmed my own opinion of politics and politicians. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Excellent narrator.

an underwhelming and in places predictable twist on a familiar tale
A slow paced and somewhat predictable story line. A curious and unnecessary reference to Prince Andrew, who fits squarely into the undesirables box.

Great read
Enjoyed the twists and characters and found it quite touching in parts. Sad that it anticipated somewhat the latest troubles in many ways.

Robert Peston's fantasy life
A bit of a slog, cranked it up to 1.5x reading speed to get through it sooner. Robert Peston's fantasy life. Or maybe it's autobiography, who knows?

Fabulous. Fantastic. Compelling. Even better than the whistleblower. Highly recommend indulging in a few very enjoyable hours. Samantha

Enlightening.
Loved this story. Not my usual read. But this had everything. Mystery, murder and love. All a great combination. I listened to it in 2days. Wish it was not finished. It’s a story I will read again in the future.

Gripping second book!
Brilliant second instalment of Gill Pecks adventures. Exciting, mail biting! Full of twists and turns! Can’t help feeling it’s somewhat autobiographical Mr Peston?!
