Summary
Stephen King's fan-favourite thriller, available in audio for the first time, read by Acadamy Award nominee James Franco.
The two things that conjured up that horrible night were his run of luck at the Wheel of Fortune and the mask....
Meet Johnny Smith. A young man whose streak of luck ends dramatically in a major car crash. Followed by blackness. A long, long time in cold limbo.
When he wakes up, life has been turned upside down. His fiancée has met someone else. And Johnny is cursed with the power to perceive evil in men's souls. He's had these hunches since he had an ice-skating accident as a child. Now he has an ability to see into the future. An ability which will bring him into a terrifying confrontation with a charismatic, power-hungry and dangerous man....
James Franco is an actor, a director, an artist and a writer. His film appearances include Milk, Pineapple Express, Spring Breakers, Howl, and 127 Hours, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.
He is the author of the novel Actors Anonymous, the collection Palo Alto, and the memoir A California Childhood. His writing has been published in Esquire, Vanity Fair, N+1, The Wall Street Journal and McSweeney's, and his art has been exhibited throughout the world, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and MoMA PS1 in New York.

One of the best
I've listened to hundreds of books on Audible but this is one of the best. Stephen King at his best, and Franco was fantastic. Loved it.

Superb, understated reading of one of King's best
In the era of Trump, this great novel is still chillingly relevant. As usual, King luxuriates in his world - Maine and New Hampshire - and so don't expect a lightening pace, just superb atmosphere created by a masterful way with tension and detail. As for James Franco's performance, it's brilliant. His reading is very different in style to the expressive, accent-filled readings that British actors often give, yet it works. I first read this book while staying in a B & B in Portsmouth, New Hampshire during winter, and my close proximity to the action of the novel left a huge impression on me. Franco's melancholic performance brought it all back. Superb.

Gripping and Predictable as usual
King is so clever in the way he sums up situations and people in a very few strokes of the brush/pen! I enjoyed the story a lot, even the bits that were clearly put in to pad it out to the size the publishers wanted.
Its not 'The Stand' or 'The Green Mile' but then again, what is?
There is nothing like a Stephen King novel for listening to when having a lovely day sewing, they aren't too horribly graphic so as to make you feel sick, but aren't bland and dull at all.
Enjoyed it, looked forward to it, but probably won't remember it for long.

Wow!
This book is simply superb! Considering the book was written in 1979 it draws spooky parallels with the world we live in now and James Franco is by far and away the most powerful narrator I have ever heard, he puts every once of feeling and acting ability in each word. Absolutely amazing.

Great story. narrator let it down.
I enjoyed the story. James Franco's tone as narrator was just too monotonous. Fans of Kung will enjoy.

New favourite Stephen King?
Enjoyed this more than the Stand? Perhaps not, but it doesn't fall far short. It's up there. I related to this especially because of the mind set I was in at the time so this will be full of bias and self analysis no doubt but I don't think it can be helped. No all I'll say is simply, you should really read this book if it the blurb and summary sounds as if it's something you'd like normally because if you think you're going to like it, you surely will but maybe, just maybe, if you're someone like me you'll find something in there that just takes you like all your favourite books do! James Franco? I like him. His narration? As good as you'd suspect of someone of his talent and yet there's is more. He, from my point of view, truly loves this book as a fan and that makes it all the better and perhaps why I feel so strongly about this book! His passion shows through in my opinion.
