Europe stares into the abyss.

Plague and famine stalk the land, monsters lurk in every shadow and greedy princes care for nothing but their own ambitions. Only one thing is certain: the elves will come again, and they will eat everyone.

Sometimes, only the darkest paths lead towards the light. Paths on which the righteous will not dare to tread . . .

And so, buried beneath the sacred splendour of the Celestial Palace, is the secret Chapel of the Holy Expediency. For its congregation of convicted monsters there are no sins that have not been committed, no lines that will not be crossed, and no mission that cannot be turned into a disastrous bloodbath.

Now the hapless Brother Diaz must somehow bind the worst of the worst to a higher cause: to put a thief on the throne of Troy, and unite the sundered church against the coming apocalypse.

When you're headed through hell, you need the devils on your side.©2025 Joe Abercrombie (P)2025 Orion Publishing Group Limited

This is everything you'd want from a new Joe Abercrombie book but with added 'glistening innards'. Another superbly drawn cast of characters, a fantastic alternate historical setting, and the trademark world-weary droll dialogue. This also introduces the reader to what may be Abercrombie's best creation yet: Vigga the Viking werewolf - absolutely lethal and hilarious in equal measure yet also touched with pathos and beautifully brought to life by Steven Pacey's voice characterisation . The plot has a Suicide Squad / Dirty Dozen vibe as a cast of absolute wrongens is charged by the Pope with safely delivering a reluctant 'princess' to her rightful throne, including an unkillable knight, a charming vampire, an insufferable necromancer (one of the top 3 in Europe!) a pirate, and last but not least a dark elf, all lead by the superb administrator Brother Diaz. This is breathlessly paced entertainment at its finest.

Worth a credit just for the Viking Werewolf alone

An exceptional work that takes everything I loved about The First Law and dials it up to 11. If you love TFL, High Fantasy or anything grimdark then do yourself a favour and experience this book. Steven Pacey once again shows why he is the best narrator to ever live

Joe and Steven have done it again

As usual, performed with Stephen Pacey’s usual skil bringing Joe Abercrombie’s Devils to life. He has a knack for writing wickedness so well, and shining a light on their lovable qualities!

Throughly enjoyable.

Abercrombie's storytelling and Pacey performance both en forme. The Devils gives us an intriguing parallel world, a ragtag fellowship of lovable monsters, a quirky quest, and thrilling action. But it’s the inner monologues and banter—mostly perfect, often wise, always insightful—that make you smile, laugh, and occasionally wince. Classic Abercrombie, with just the right amount of madness.

First class performance as expected from Steven and Joe’s writing takes you on an emotional rollercoaster, also as expected. Sad that it had to end.

Abercrombie has yet again brought life to the grey areas of life.

The Devils delivers everything fans love about Joe Abercrombie—gritty characters, dark humour, and razor-sharp dialogue—but with a fresh and daring new story. It’s different, but unmistakably Abercrombie. Steven Pacey is absolutely brilliant, as he always is. Five stars.

Classic Abercrombie with a Twist

great story and a great performance, I would have liked to see a bit more development hopefully to flesh out the world a bit more and a bit less fighting but to each his own it was a great story on its own

Steven and Joe is a match made in heaven

Like playing game of Dungeons and Dragons with Terry Pratchett, Terry Gilliam and Douglas Adams as your fellow players; Joe Abercrombie writes like the most excellent Dungeon Master.

Flitting expertly between comedic dialogue, gory battles and genuinely emotional character moments, I felt like I was at the hands of a highly competent storyteller with a vibrant fantasy world in their head that they relished touring the reader through.

Abercrombie avoids the long winded exposition that often plagues the genre, instead introducing each member of our misfit band of adventures into a vibrant alternate fantasy world whilst building the narrative at a pleasing pace. There is no room for boredom or repetition as you are swept up with ecclesiastical parody, sparkling spellcraft and blood splattered swordplay. It's a world of elves, warewolves and fart jokes that strikes that ideal balance between comedy and threat.

Highly recommend!

Well paced, whip smart, funny and fresh!
