Summary

November 1940. Darkness descends, and another anxious night begins for those tasked with guarding the industrial heartland of London from enemy attack. As a policeman patrols the Royal Albert Dock, something catches his eye - a man is sprawled awkwardly across a nearby barge, a dagger lodged in his back. Detective Inspector John Jago of West Ham CID discovers the victim was a dock worker by day and a Home Guard volunteer by night - and there are things even his wife doesn't know about his past. As the investigation unfolds, Jago uncovers a widening circle of secrets ranging across family tensions, the last war and a far-flung corner of the British Empire.

Excellent

Another great story in this series, with period details and social mores which aid the plot and add to interest without being obtrusive. Fantastic narrator with a very believable set of 'voices'.

Excellent

I’ve given this 5 Stars and it deserves it -
Love the characters who walk you down the lanes of history in a very human way.
The story is sad, troubling and comforting but still manages to twist and turn. Definitely worth one of you credits!

Dixon of Dock Green?

Does anyone else in the World remember Constable Dixon knowing everyone on his beat ( this was before “manor”)?
Get that same, football results off the teleprinter, jellied veal for tea and Dixon before bed feeling ( this was before “vibes”).
Go on Mike Hollow, give Craddock something to get his baby teeth into!

wartime detective solves the case again.

The narrator is superb and suits the essence of the characters he portrays, his ability to become many people is amazing. His pace of delivery is perfect and not rushed .
The story is intriguing and well researched .I feel that the historical references about the views of different people back then that add to the story are woven in brilliantly.

The main story is of course a murder that needs solving , this time in the Docklands London where a man is found stabbed to death.
Each Docks had a vast number employees some casual some regular were described as a completely separate world with its own set of rules regulations .which Jego needs to learn of and understand in order to solve the case.
He is Hindered by blackouts combined with threat of aid raids , lack of sleep ,imminent death or injury, rationing. - lack of food. Fatigue.and a diverse group of suspects and witnesses. This adds to the tension. And frustration for our hero.

As the series of books are evolving the sub plots and repeated side characters are also developing nicely and add some humour especially Jego’s young Sergeant Craddock who’s always hungry.so yes I’m invested in the characters.
And one day Jego May tell Dorothy he loves her .I’m willingly him to just get on with it !
On to the next to The book.

Love it.

Simon Mattocks brings these characters to life, I love his narration, I could be in the war time streets watching the story unfold. The author has certainly captured the essence of the time, in the Eastend. I hope there will be more stories in the future x

Changed me to a reader of Novels

Have always been a reader of factual history books but for some reason fancied a change.
Therefore chose this series of books for obvious reasons and now I’m hooked as these simply captivated me.
Sadly I have just downloaded the last in the series but
hoping another is pending ?

I'm really enjoying this series . . .

. . . and for me, the stories get better as the series proceeds. "The docklands murder" seemed very well crafted plotwise with sythpathetic and believable characters who I find are am beginning to care about. If, like me, you are looking for a murder mystery that does not involve getting into the mindset of a twisted psychopath, then I would thoroughly recommend The Blitz Detective series.
