Summary

Eight years a soldier, Peter Ash came home from Iraq and Afghanistan with only one souvenir: what he calls 'white static', a buzzing claustrophobia due to post-traumatic stress that has driven him to spend a year roaming the Pacific coast's mountains and forests, sleeping under the stars.

But when a friend from the marines commits suicide, Ash returns to civilisation to help the man's widow and two young children. While repairing her dilapidated porch, he makes two unwelcome discoveries: the first is a dog, the meanest, ugliest dog he's ever laid eyes on, guarding a suitcase; the second unwelcome surprise is the suitcase's contents—$400,000 in cash and four slabs of plastic explosive.

Just what was his friend caught up in during his final days? Ash will find that the demons of war aren't easy to leave behind....

Critic reviews

"Lots of characters get compared to my own Jack Reacher, but Peter Ash is the real deal." (Lee Child)

Superb Like Baldacci vs Patterson

Great narration and plot. If you enjoy Alex Cross, Amos Decker, Private books this is for you.

An enjoyable read

This was an entertaining book that kept me company on my dog walks. If you like Jack Reacher you will likely enjoy this story. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life. I'm already looking up the next Peter Ash novel!

Exciting and engaging

I wasn’t sure when I started listening because the beginning was a bit slow - or at least it felt like that. It was important in hindsight, to set the scene. It’s a really engaging and exciting story.

A bit like a fledgling version of a cross between the characters of John Milton and Jack Reacher - harsh but fair.

The narration is excellent. I suppose it felt like the author started to get into his stride as the book continued.

Overall I enjoyed it and I loved the stinky dog too!

A great read

Nick Petrie is a good writer, I don't understand why more of his books are not available on Audible or why more members are not reading them. They're definitely missing out.

Not your average

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Very well written and narrated with well fleshed out characters and a rip roaring adventure. I highly recommend.

An outstanding high-octane freebie from Audible

The Plus Catalogue can be a bit hit and miss, with absolute gems (like this one) and quite a few duds. The Drifter was great! A real seat-of-the-pants thrill ride at 100mph. Peter Ash is a convincing and well-rounded character. Yes, I guess there might be Jack Reacher comparisons but to be honest he’s his own character. I thought every minute was great. And there’s a dog too… what’s not to like. The narrator was pretty good, maybe a little stilted during quick-fire dialogue but that didn’t spoil it. I’ll be downloading more of the series asap as they’re worth using credits on.
