About this listen

David Blake likes to think he’s no gangster. He's a white-collar criminal, working for gangster Bobby Mahoney, enjoying the money pouring in. Trouble is, a big chunk of that money has just gone missing along with Geordie Cartwright. Has Geordie done a runner or been killed by a rival gang? In a bloody finale, Blake has to make an agonising choice and someone has to pay the ultimate price....

I bought this on Audible some time ago. I have just re-listened to it, and still throughly enjoyed it. This time instead of focusing on following the ins and outs of the story I could really listen to how it was constructed, and appreciate how David's story is developed, step by step, until his fate becomes inevitable. Some books are sloppy and rubbish, and I wonder to myself what on Earth the publisher was thinking about, but this is a well crafted, solid, and absorbing read. It is extremely well read too. Want to lose yourself in a tale! I heartily recommend this.

Brilliant even second time around

Best book of the last year by a distance...

Plot, storyline, characters, depth of the story masterfully written & very well narrated with a gravitas to the main characters that’s was truly brilliant. I had read a review that nearly turned me from the book that said the accents in the narration were poor...NONSENSE..yes the odd sentence it may have slipped a few points but if you’re listening intently to the story it’s not worth a mention!

Brilliant just do it!

Steve

This book is a gripping tale that is enhanced totally by the narrater David Nellist. His wonderful Jordie accent kept us amused and that coupled with the author's humour at times had us laughing out loud. We were totally absorbed for our journey across France and had to park up to hear the end of the story we were so engrossed. A brilliant way to pass the time on boring roads. The story is simple but well thought through with an interesting twist that one does not expect. It is quite a strange thing to find yourself on the side of the baddies and not wanting them to get caught. A book I would recommend to anyone who can understand the Jordie humour and accent not a book for someone trying to learn English!!!

A gripping graphic insight into the world of crime

Absolutely loved it however there isn't really any plot twists, you can see everything coming from a mile away. Still brilliant though

Would you consider the audio edition of The Drop to be better than the print version?

The audio version gave you so much more in bringing the story to life as the narrator's accent was first class.

What did you like best about this story?

As an exiled Geordie myself I knew all the locations mentioned, which for me gave the book added dimension.

What about David Nellist’s performance did you like?

Very down to earth no frills just fast paced good old excitement.

I would have listened to this in one go but forced myself to hear it over a couple of days.

Any additional comments?

I look forward to Howard Linskey next book as this will be a definite purchase for my library.
