Summary

Major Jimjoy Earle Wright, secret agent of the Empire, is intelligent and highly trained. But he succeeds all too well in overthrowing a military dictatorship - and the result is a new government inimical to the Empire and disgrace for Jimjoy. After surviving two assassination attempts, Jimjoy realizes that it's his own imperial superiors who want him dead; that, in fact, his worst enemies could become his best friends. He fights his way to safety on the planet Accord, where the Ecolitan Institute wins his loyalty and changes his identity. Now he is James Joyson Whaler, Ecolitan, in the middle of a war of independence against the inconceivably superior forces of the Empire.

Good story spoilt by sound effects.

I read this when it first came out and looked forward to enjoying the audio. Would have been 4 stars if you could get rid of the sound effects. I had forgotten how annoying these were when reading the book, but in audio the 'thrums', 'tings' etc just ruined all the action parts of the story.
I want to listen to the rest of the series, but only if these awful sound effects are edited out. Not the fault of the narrator because they are written in by the author. Narration was good.
Jimjoy Wright is a superhero who kills tens of thousands of people, so should he be called a super villain? He does the most amazing things with absolutely no explanation as to how he did them. He can do anything, fight better than anyone, fly anything, hide in plain sight, go without sleep for days on end and still work out incredibly complex maths, worry about saving a silly man and blow up a planet...
Despite, and because of, all this, I enjoyed the book.
