Summary

Sir Michael Caine is loved not just for his many films, but for his warmth, honesty, and humour in describing every aspect of his life from his humble South London beginnings to performing alongside the greatest Hollywood actors of the day. As Sheridan Morley wrote about his first book: 'It has taken two decades to get a man back on (Niven's) Moon, and the man is Michael Caine.'

In this long-awaited, and self-penned, new autobiography, he tells us not only the events of the almost 20 years since his last book – which include his Oscar winning film Cider House Rules, as well as the box-office busting Batman - but also many great eye-opening and entertaining stories from his life and career, shedding light on the real Hollywood and the years he struggled to get there.

With all the charm and wit we know him for, this audiobook is set to become a new classic to rank alongside Niven's Moon's a Balloon.

Great book

I've very much enjoyed this book being read by the author. His voice adds so much to the story, which in itself is a good insight in to his life and the films he has been in.

Great book and wonderful to hear the author reading it

I read his first autobiography many years ago and really enjoyed it. I love Michael Caine as an actor. His story and down-to-earth style make for enjoyable reading.
When I listened to this update it not only went over some of the best bits of the last book I had read about him, but filled in more and interesting details and then added everything since. Having the author read it himself is like sitting down in a comfy chair next to him while he tells you about his life. It’s up close and personal. And fascinating!
He is one of our national treasures and his autobiography is a thoroughly enjoyable narrative.

Packed full of interesting content

Full of wonderful showbiz stories. Portrays the difficult struggles in hard times contrasted well with stories of the big time. I feel I know Michael much better now and there were a few genuine revaluations. He is humble and grateful and warm by the end.

A true legend

Michael Caine treats us to a rare insight into his unlikely story. A very enjoyable listen, his wealth of stories and anecdotes of people in the business is sometimes touching, sometimes moving and very laugh out loud funny. He is a true icon even if his wife does make him take the rubbish out!

Laughed out loud

What made the experience of listening to The Elephant to Hollywood the most enjoyable?

Michael Caine and his ability to tell a good anecdote

What other book might you compare The Elephant to Hollywood to, and why?

David Niven's The Moon's a Balloon because of the tales of Hollywood greats and the making of movies.

What does Michael Caine bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

That distinctive accent and sometimes he laughed at his own stories!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both
