About this listen

Loveday Brooke is the first female detective created by a woman writer. Catherine Louisa Pirkis published stories about this smart, spirited sleuth in the 1880s, and they were collected into this anthology in 1894. In these tales, Loveday takes on cases involving wayward nuns, missing debutantes, a mysterious princess, and a ghost who resembles Napoleon, among other strange phenomena. Throughout, she is insightful, professional, and simply more intelligent than anyone else around her, indicating that Loveday and Pirkis were both ahead of their time. This collection includes seven stories: “The Black Bag Left on a Doorstep”, “The Murder at Troyte’s Hill”, “The Redhill Sisterhood”, “A Princess’ Vengeance”, “Drawn Daggers”, “The Ghost of Fountain Lane”, and “Missing”.

gentle stories, which were very forward thinking for their time. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

really enjoyed these stories

Very odd accents and the narrator is quite flat and toneless. Someone else like a Satnav and there is something in that.

The narration is a struggle

Quite good stories. A less accomplished Holmes type collection but worth a listen as an alternative type of detective fiction if you like that genre. The narration was a bit difficult at times with a variety of accents and characterisations that were hard to digest…

Variation on a theme

I enjoy old as well as contemporary fiction, both for entertainment and context. The stories were much of their time, but good to have a female centre stage. Narration unfortunately didn’t enhance, particularly when accents were attempted- quite excruciating I am afraid.

Of their time

I couldn't listen for more than a few minutes, the high pitched voice of the narrator set my dog off!

My poor eardrums.

I'll start by saying that the narrator is by no means as terrible as I was lead to believe by reading the other reviews. The recurrent characters have consistent voices throughout the stories, and the new characters have voices easily distinguished from the rest. I enjoyed the narration - it was not spectacular, but quite good.

The stories themselves were great, and I enjoyed the was L. Brooke was taking her profession seriously. The only unexpected thing was the was the mysteries unfolded. Even after L. Brooke was called to assist, her actions were described, but with little clues as to what she actually meant by what she was doing. So it makes it harder for the reader (or listener) to have their own theories. I recommend this to everyone looking for some classic mysteries!

much better than expected

The narration does not do justice to this excellent book. She is speeding through it as if there is a race to finish it. And the pitch of her voice (or whatever it’s called) is irritating. The sleuthing saves the audiobook.

Excellent Book - Narrator could be better

The interest in these stories lie mainly in the fact that the heroine is playing an unusual role. I finally finished listening whilst I’ll and needing entertainment, as my husband and I had given up our earlier attempt because the odd emphases, strange forced accents and artificially pitched voice of the narrator ruined the stories.

Victorian story ruined by narrator

Stick with the narration. A easy listen with only the occasional accent jarring. Excellent for a freebie.

For old fashioned storytelling

I really liked the Loveday Brooke stories on the radio a few years ago but simply couldn't cope with the narrator of this audiobook. Her reedy high-pitched voice, weird accents and mispronunciations are just as annoying as walking with a stone in your shoe in the rain without an umbrella then slipping on some wet leaves and falling face down in the mud only to see your keys drop from your hand into a drain. Well, almost as annoying.

Unlistenable
