Summary

Fabulous family saga of secrets held through two generations, set against the atmospheric background of the Lake District at Christmas. The year 1936 is drawing to a close. Winter grips Wetmoreland and causes a rare phenonmenon: The lakes freeze. For two local families, the Richardsons and the Grindleys, this will bring unexpected upheaval, as the frozen lake entices long-estranged siblings and children to return home for the holiday season.

Some are aware of what is happening in Europe; others don't want to know. Everyone's keen to put aside their troubles - money worries, love tangles, career problems, domestic rifts - and enjoy themselves skating while they can. But one visitor carries the seed of violence, and not even the redoubtable matriarch of the Richardson clan can prevent the carefully buried secrets of the past from reappearing and transforming everything.

A compelling blend of family closeness and strife, dazzling passion and the dark influence of history, this is an enthralling listen to curl up and savour.

I loved it.

I loved the book, it captured the times and class differences well. I love a book that I see in my head as I read or listen, this was one of them.

I enjoyed this book but I did find it rather difficult remembering all the names and who they were

A well researched book

Story was a trifle slow for a fair bit. It was probably me confused on painkillers ,because I had a fall, that caused me to become somewhat confused by which families the huge amount of characters belonged too.The story did liven up and had a satisfactory ending.

A really enjoyable family drama.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to The Frozen Lake. The narration was excellent as different characters were given their own accents (as described in the book) as well as suitable/appropriate intonation so you always knew who was speaking.
I began to suspect some of the answers to mysteries surrounding the two families but didn't guess them all especially the very last 'twist'.

my head was reeling a bit

My head was reeling a bit with this story. There are a lot of people whose names I had to remember and it took me a while to remember who was who. it was a good story and very well narrated.

The Frozen Lake by Elizabeth Edmondson

I have read and listened to a number of this Author books. And they are never a disappointment. The characters are very real, and complicated. And their interaction wonderful, the performance is also excellent.
Very good book, happy to get it.
