About this listen

Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) and Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) were both regarded as the female poet laureates of their time, and between them their writings spanned almost the entire Victorian age, from the end of Romanticism to the beginnings of Modernism. This selection of their shorter works contains all the major themes that animated them - social justice, faith, love and mortality - and some of the best-loved poetry in English, including "In The Deep Midwinter" and "How Do I Love Thee?"

These poems reflect the changing world in which they were composed, but they also reflect the complex passions of two extraordinary women.

Editor reviews

Two of the nineteenth century's most passionate female voices come together in this thought-provoking selection of their shorter poems. Both Browning and Rossetti explore themes of love, death, and spirituality in their poetry. Rachel Bavidge has a charming voice, and she reads Browning's poems enthusiastically. Her ability to match her voice to the emotion behind the words is uncanny, and one can often hear a smile as she reads. Georgina Sutton ably captures the more somber tones in Rossetti's poetry. She often speaks in a low voice and absorbs the melancholy mood of the poet in her narration. For Rossetti's more intense poems, she speaks with force and vivacity. Both narrators insert passion into the poetry, and their eloquent narrations highlight this superb collection.
