About this listen

The war is drawing to a close, but the munitions girls are still hard at work in the factory. Gladys, who's been promoted to overseer, has been feeling lonely lately. Her daughter has moved away, and a lot of her friends have left Gosport, too.

Then an act of kindness towards Goldie, a homeless teenager, provides Gladys with a new friend and lodger. But Goldie has run away from her dangerous family - a group of local gangsters and black-market smugglers, including a particular thug, a pimp, who is determined to make the girl his. Can Gladys keep both of them safe while dealing with her own unexpected pregnancy?

Took me a while to get into .....

Having read/listened to the previous 3 books in the series I was disappointed that this book didn’t start where book 3 finished. In book 3 the story ended at Christmas 1944 but this book began at August 1944 and the beginning of the story was different to the one that book 3 ended. Must say though by this book the narrator (whom I didn’t enjoy listening to) got better than in previous books. Overall though I quite enjoyed the story but it did take me some time to actually get into it.

Absolutely brilliant

I really have loved all the four books in this series. The narrator was good as well.

Heart rending

What a heart rending story of what people went through during the Second World War and the devastation caused by the blitz.

Disappointed

Failed to live up to the previous books, but nice enough. I wouldn't listen to it twice

The Gunpowder and Glory Girls

Very easy to listen to. The story is good and the audio simply enhances it.

Name-dropping

Naming politicians of the era is all part and parcel for the story. As is popular entertainers of the time. What I did find distasteful was the shameless namedropping of the murderous Kray twins although it was whilst they were children. There was no need for their inclusion and it cheapened the story.
