Summary

Roger Standing, commander of the British Empire and the prime minister's special adviser for education, is murdered. DCI Tom Caton is not short of suspects. But if this is a simple mugging gone wrong then why has MI5 ransacked his apartment, and why is Special Branch disrupting the investigation? And why are the widow and her son taking the news so calmly?

Roger Standing was not what he seemed...and something is rotten in the corridors of power. Will the killer strike again?

Brilliant book, well researched and written

If you could sum up The Head Case in three words, what would they be?

Intelligent, well written

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Head Case?

The scene on the roof towards the end of the book

Which character – as performed by Michael Troughton – was your favourite?

DCI Tom Caton - It is quite unusual to find a meticulous detective who also cares about lifestyle in a novel.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found emotional reactions to some of the very recognisable group dynamics that are described.

Any additional comments?

I will certainly buy more of Bill Rogers books - Some more Audible please.

An interesting plot

Despite the poor narration which detracted from the experience, I enjoyed the book and found the plot interesting and engaging. I like other books by this author better than this one, but I still enjoyed this one and I would certainly buy more by this author.

Disappointing

Wanted to like this bok after hearing the first in the series. Found the story thin and the ending rather unexciting.. Such a pity, hope the next in the series is better.

Not worth the effort of listening

I really did try to like this book but I simply couldn't get into it. I love listening to a good mystery audiobook and I hoped this was a good find - how wrong I was. This book has so many faults that just cry out for a good editor. Just why does the author feel the need to pad the storyline with dull waffling about education policy? And is it too much to ask for the lead character (Caton) to adopt a more natural speech pattern? I found the lead characters dull and unimaginative.
The narration really doesn't help either. I stopped noticing which character was supposedly speaking as the narrator's range is so narrow.
Just a painful, boring listen.

Weak story made worse by poor reader.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A better story, less banal conversations between characters and a reader with character in his voice. He was too weak. Made the lead detective sound weak - almost femine.

What will your next listen be?

Not Bill Rogers or this reader that is for sure.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Troughton’s performances?

Absolutely not.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Head Case?

All the chit chat got on my nerves.
