About this listen
They died 30 years ago, but the case is not closed.
Five walkers set out to climb Ben Lomond on a fine October day. Within hours the weather has taken a turn for the worst. The group find themselves lost on the mountain. Two of the climbers manage to make it back down and call for help.
The following day a body is found. One of the female climbers has been strangled, and another man is missing without a trace.
DCI Dani Bevan is called to the Loch Lomond town of Ardyle to lead the case. It quickly becomes clear that Bevan must dig into the events of a similar tragedy that occurred on the hills 30 years earlier in order to find the killer.
This requires the DCI to face up to the ghosts of her own tragic past and to endeavor to put them behind her once and for all.

Another great Crime writer, thoroughly enjoyed this first book of the series. Narration brilliant as ever with David Monteath.

American market
This will appeal to the American market as it includes the love interest of an American detective with a story set in Scotland. Except for the excruciating part where Dani and Andy took it in turns to explain ' who dunnit ' , it was a reasonable listen.

Def not for me!
There was nothing I liked about this book. David Monteath struggled on manfully though I’m not sure for how long as I couldn’t bear to continue with it.

Least favourite book of the year
Really didn’t enjoy this book. The blurb sounded promising but the writing was, at best, childish and contrived. Think of a word, then a more obscure version of it and use it. And use any word rather than the perfectly serviceable “said”. Once I became aware of this foible it was distracting and irritating. The dialogue never flowed and often sounded pretentious, delivered by one-dimensional, charmless characters. The story had potential which wasn’t realised. Reader, prepare to suspend disbelief and take huge leaps of faith as our heroine follows a hunch based on, well, nothing at all. Then, without giving anything away, someone is tracked down in London with no hint about how the address was discovered.
There is no such crime as arson in Scotland (it’s called fire raising north of the Border) something our police heroine is unaware of, since she bandied the word around at the scene of a fire.
The most chilling words for me were the final ones, promising DCI Dani Bevan would be back. Not on my iPad, she won’t
