Summary

One woman found dead. Another kidnapped. Two cases. One overworked Scottish detective. The Innocent and the Dead is the first in the DI Jack Knox series and comes with the prequel story 'Labyrinth'.

DI Jack Knox is called in to investigate a high-profile case. A local distiller’s daughter has gone missing, and when he receives a ransom note, his fears that it is a kidnapping are confirmed. Knox decides to take a serious risk to capture the abductors, but the stakes could not be higher. The father is wealthy and well-connected. If Knox’s gamble goes wrong, he’ll have hell to pay.

Meanwhile in the prequel story, 'Labyrinth', the body of an attractive young woman is found in woodland on Edinburgh’s iconic Calton Hill. Knox will have to cut through the lies of the people who knew her in order to establish a motive and collar the killer.

Great Listen

Loved it, David Minteath narration is superb and the writer paints a clear picture of life in Scotland and
gives a running background of this fascinating detective.

Entertaining short stories

Cute and concise stories with no unnecessary filler made for an enjoyable listen. Nice to have a lead character who isn't a tortured alcoholic. Narrator nailed all the different Scottish accents but one sounded just like Ken Bruce which just made me laugh every time he used it 😃

This is more like a Google map guide of Edinburgh

Pretty basic short stories which repeats itself with identical wording.

Over descriptions of random things which has no relevance to the story. Not sure I would invest in another book from this author.

Very enjoyable

I like that the story has several police cases that are solved, rather than just one.. Enjoyed it very much

Disappointing

I wanted to like this police procedural set in Edinburgh, but I felt it was too short and the story wasn't developed enough. I will try the second in the series and hope that it is better.

I did, however, love the narration by David Monteath.

Two good stories!

Loved all it. Really good value and really well read. Take no notice of the critical reviews of the narration.

Good old fashioned police procedurals.

Coming from the not so distant shores of Fife I particularly enjoyed the references to local landmarks and the outstanding uniqueness of this part of Scotland. Edinburgh is a beautiful city and given its history lends itself well to the darker sides of life. Those who enjoy the likes of J.D Kirk and the character Jack Logan will enjoy this.
