Summary

House witch Finlay Ashowan must contend with matters of the heart, hearth, family, and kingdom in the second book of a whimsical and winning fantasy series

As a wielder of domestic magic, Finlay Ashowan likes to keep his affairs as neat and orderly as his kitchen. But between his work for the King and Queen of Daxaria and a new (secret) relationship with Lady Annika Jenoure, his life is anything but tidy.

For one thing, if Annika and Fin are to continue their romance, they’ll need to sort out the pesky issue of Fin’s being a commoner—before Annika is forced into a political marriage that interferes with her own carefully laid plans.

For another, pressure is mounting as the war with Troivack draws ever closer. When Fin requests time away from the castle to rest, the King agrees but under a very particular condition: Fin must brave the streets of Austice as a spy, sleuthing out the plans of the Troivackian troops allegedly hidden there.

Further complicating things, Fin’s estranged father is on his way to Daxaria, an unexpected and unappreciated arrival that’s bound to wreak even more havoc in his son’s life.

As Fin forges new friendships and alliances—magical and non-magical alike—he becomes even more enmeshed in courtly intrigues, old feuds, and very personal problems. And the more he tries to clean up the various messes in his life, the more apparent it becomes that his troubles are only just beginning...

The second volume of the hit romantic-fantasy series—with more than a million views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Very enjoyable

I'm really enjoying the series and have burned through the first two in less than a week. The story is well paced, plenty of interesting characters, and it has made me giggle.
The reason it's getting four stars and not five is due to some minor issues with editing. For instance, you will be left in absolutely no doubt whatsoever as to the colour of the main character's hair because, even though it didn't happen in the first book, the author mentions it in approximately every third sentence. It happened so often that there were times when I found myself not entirely focusing on what was happening in the plot because I was waiting for the next mention of "the redhead".
Overall though, I would recommend this book and I'm now off to get myself the next one.

Please read this series

I can't even explain how much I'm living this story and these characters. I'm 45 next week and still snicker every single time Lord Fucks is mentioned. There's romance, intrigue and an over all heart warming story about tolerance and acceptance and family not being just blood ❤️

Cosy and thrilling

This story has a way to be both full of deep emotions and problems but at the same time as it always has a cosy and whimsical feel to it. Just lovely!

Hilarious, serious, fantastical - just brilliant!

Laughed out loud and had tears in my eyes as parts were heart wrenching. Written and read so well I felt transported there. Thank you!

Will be buying all your books now… please write faster if you can. Would be a sad day when I no longer have something so incredible to listen to.

Misogyny wrapped in Progressiveness

I don't know what to say about this series. I want to enjoy it SO MUCH but at every turn it disappointed me. The reviews were so positive and I really don't understand why.

Every main woman is "not like the other girls" i swear. The main man Finlay is so "perfect" that it's honestly boring to hear from his point of view. Every time something bad happens he just fixes it immediately and everything is okay again. None of the women seem to have any agency, even if they are born royal it seems as though their husbands and fathers get to choose everything for them - not even in cosy fantasy can we escape misogynistic realities.

I just felt like I was listening to a plot of a wish fulfillment anime where the underdog protagonist is the perfect hero who gets everyone on their side and manages to shout and be disrespectful towards everyone and they just accept it.
