About this listen

THE RICHARD & JUDY PICK

'Deliciously dark and utterly addictive — my favourite Ruth Ware yet’ LUCY FOLEY

Everyone wanted her life
Someone wanted her dead

It was Hannah who found April’s body ten years ago.
It was Hannah who didn’t question what she saw that day.
Did her testimony put an innocent man in prison?

She needs to know the truth.

Even if it means questioning her own friends.
Even if it means putting her own life at risk.

Because if the killer wasn’t a stranger, it's someone she knows . . .

PRAISE FOR THE IT GIRL:

'An absolute belter. Could not put it down! I thought I knew who the killer was. Then I was CERTAIN it was another person! Then DEFINITELY another! Great characterisation, glamorous setting, all round FABALISS!' Marian Keyes

'A cracking read – and that ending!' Shari Lapena

'Every Ruth Ware novel is a unique and unexpected gem and this one is no exception. A heady, tense, slowburn dream of a book, multi-layered and steeped in atmosphere and peril. I loved every page' Lisa Jewell

'Absolutely brilliant murder mystery - seamless, flawless, perfectly clued and utterly gripping' Sophie Hannah

'Impeccably crafted and totally compulsive – you’ll be sad to reach the final page and realise you have to say goodbye' JP Delaney

'Ruth Ware’s richly-textured The It Girl is at once an engrossing murder mystery while also a perfectly crafted and haunting examination of lost youth and the compromises of adulthood, as a woman unpicks the past secrets of her university friends to finally lay to rest her murdered best friend, the dazzling April. Reminiscent of The Secret History, Ware has surpassed herself with this gripping, absorbing whodunnit. I loved it! All hail the Queen' Sarah Pinborough

'If you ever idly wish that Agatha Christie would write a new book, Ruth Ware has got you covered. The It Girl has all the clues, twists and red herrings you could wish for, in a thoroughly modern setting. An impeccably constructed mystery from start to finish' Jane Casey

'It’s brilliant. Ruth is the master of the fiendishly twisty, yet completely believable, plot' Elly Griffiths

'Just finished The It Girl by Ruth Ware and now my life is divided in two: before and after. Before: cool, calm, chilled. After: What? No! OMG! A wild ride that’s deliciously twisting, with countless gasp-out-loud moments' Janice Hallett

'A new Ruth Ware is always a treat and The It Girl is one of her best. You can almost see her smiling as she feeds you the little morsels that should help you work everything out - if only you were as clever as Ruth! As sleek and chilling as a knife between the ribs' Sarah J. Naughton

'Clever. Compelling and with a terrific sense of place. Ruth Ware’s The It Girl grips to the end' Jane Shemilt©2022 Ruth Ware (P)2022 Simon & Schuster, UK

I was so looking forward to this, despite the terrible Imogen Church narrating. Speed her up to make it bearable! The story is far too long and I skipped long parts of it and still kept up.

Not the worst book but not the best and if it was cut by a quarter, maybe it would have been easier to read.

Too long and draaaaaags

Good story, lots of twists. no issues with the narration as far as I'm concerned

worth a read

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Got to live out my Oxford fantasy through the characters. Very entertaining with a plot that keeps you guessing right to the very end

Loved it

I am a big Ruth Ware fan and at first worried if this was going to live up to her previous works. Well it did! The Narration is possibly not to everyone’s taste, but I got used to it and ended up marrying it with the main character and enjoying it. Great plot twists, characters and setting. Welldone Ruth! I’m sad it’s finished.

Absolutely Brilliant

The story kept me interested until the end, but there was a LOT of unnecessary, and repetitive padding. I found Imogen Church's voice rather grating too, which made me almost dislike the characters she was portraying.

Too much boring detail

Well-characterised by the narrator. Kept me uncertain of the outcome until fairly near the end! Plot is well thought-out, planting small items of information skilfully so I had forgotten them by the time their relevance was apparent.

Gripping

This is a good story and well performed. Really irritating use of a 'phone' effect on the voices when the lead character is taking a phone call. It's distracting and irritating, when there are no other effects. Almost made me return it. A shame as it spoils a good audio book.

Audio Effects Irritating but story good

As an avid Audible listener it’s not unusual for me to devour a book in a couple of days, and It Girl was no different. The story quickly sucks you in and the narrator’s voice makes for easy listening (if you ignore the odd echoing on the recording) but the whole story (IMHO) is let down by the last couple of chapters. Having spent such time and effort weaving the story and laying small nuggets of information throughout the book, to have the climax be as it was felt like an injustice. A great listen if you’re wanting something easy to follow, but not one I’d say you HAVE to listen to. A real shame.

Addictive and gripping, but let down by the ending

Ruth Ware is brilliant writer and story teller. IT Girl was again one smashing story, highly recommend to listen to IT :) Imogen Church is starring as a narrator too, and I need congratulate to both ladies for this fantastic masterpiece! Can't wait to hear next one soon. Let it be soon, please. :) Ciao!

What a story!

I really love Ruth Ware as an author and Imogen Church as a narrator of her books. From the start this recording sounded a bit echoey and it was annoying! I did check it wasn't just my phone and played it on a number of devices. Out of all the books I have read by this author, this is my least favourite, but still a good read anyway.
