About this listen

A gruesome discovery at an old children's home lays bare terrible secret's from Norwich's past in the second gripping mystery for Dr Ruth Galloway.

'The setting is enticingly atmospheric . . . a really intelligent murder story' Independent

Dr Ruth Galloway's forensic skills are called upon when builders, demolishing an old house in Norwich, uncover the bones of a child - minus the skull - beneath a doorway. Is it some ritual sacrifice or just plain straightforward murder? Ruth links up with DCI Harry Nelson to investigate.

The house was once a children's home. Nelson traces the Catholic priest who used to run the place. He tells him that two children did go missing forty years before - a boy and a girl. They were never found.

When carbon dating proves that the child's bones predate the home and relate to a time when the house was privately owned, Ruth is drawn ever more deeply into the case. But as spring turns into summer it becomes clear that someone is desperate to put her off the scent by frightening her to death...

Another gripping story

Kept you guessing til the end.
Including suspense, jump-scares and some laugh out loud bits too.

Deepening the relationships between the main characters and fleshing out their personalities and back stories.

Having started with some of the later books, I've now noticed the books have been given an order number so, I'm listening to the earlier books in order. This has helped make sense of the relationship history of the main characters. As the author doesn't give details of what's happened in previous books, in the later ones.

Captivating.
Addictive.

Evocative

Kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The steaming relationships are mesmerising. Brilliantly read, the accents are superb. Marvellous

Enjoyable

A bit soap-opera-y but a good performance with an enjoyable and interesting story line. I kept reading til the end but might wait a bit til I read the next one

A lot to learn about Roman and other ancient Gods.

A lovely crime book that is exited to the end. Many characters are suspicious, and in the end it's not the one I expected.
