About this listen

Although she hadn't known Leonard Mallett very well, Carole Seddon feels duty bound to attend her fellow committee member's funeral. As she suspected, the sermon is very predictable - not unlike Leonard himself. What she couldn't have predicted was that the deceased's daughter would use the occasion to publicly accuse her stepmother of murder. Did Heather Mallett really kill her husband? Deciding to get to the heart of the matter, Carole's neighbour Jude joins the new community choir - and discovers that amidst the clashing egos and petty resentments lurk some decidedly false notes. At least one chorister would appear to be hiding a deadly secret - and it's up to Carole and Jude to unearth the truth.

Enjoyable But Not His Best

As with this whole series easy to listen too and well read by the author. which is rare. But he does have an extensive BBC background as a producer, presenter and his great Charles Paris books dramatised (some are on Audible, if a bit expensive for a short listen).
But back to this book. Not his best. I would go back to the earlier Death series and start there. I now have I believe the whole cannon. so can't reccomend him enough. Good cosy crime well read!

Simon Brett, marvellous author, reads his own books

I love everything Simon Brett writes! Hilariously funny, poignant, endearing and razor sharp! National treasure!

Poor Carole

Having listened to all the series - and thank God for them during lockdown) - I do feel that the author has decided he was too nice to Carole in the earlier books. She began to thaw out nicely under jude's influence, but in the latest three or four books, she's back to being even more tight-lipped and judgemental than she was in the beginning. He often uses the word peevish.

Come on Simon, give her a break.

I'm giving it five stars but....

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, the way its written, the narration, ive enjoyed them all. This last one though, the narrator (the author) sounded tired, really tired, like he was at the end of a very long day and just wanted it over with. I'd love another book in the series but I think this may be it.....
It's a great one though, start at the first book and you'll be hooked, murder mystery, real believable characters that have a warmth and humour that other books sometimes lack.

Disappointing

I confess to abandoning this after 4 chapters. Mr Brett sounds somewhat bored in his narration which left me disinterested in characters, plot and outcome. A great shame

Weak plot

Weak plot resolution. As if author ran out of ideas. Others in the series better.

Homophobic and disappointing

Having enjoyed a lot of Simon Brett's books I was disappointed to hear this instalment in an otherwise brilliant series and shocked that Brett was willing to conflate pedophilia with homosexuality. I shan't be listening to any more of his work.
