About this listen

Ten years after nuclear war devastates Britain, Lazarus and his adoptive siblings are flesh and blood to each other; to their victims, they are ruthless killers who should exist only in nightmares. Now their next target, a group of men seemingly made soft by a decade of hiding in underground bunkers, welcome the upcoming attack because they are far from weak. Armed and prepared, they are ready for Lazarus and his family.

After the ensuing violence, lost and alone, Lazarus is desperate to make it through the irradiated wasteland to his clan before their captors reach a new government forming in Dover. Armed only with his axe, Lazarus will stop at nothing to kill the men who would dare threaten his kin.

But, unknown to either side, a terrible secret waits far below Dover Castle, lost for decades in the silent labyrinth of wartime tunnels.

A secret infinitely more dangerous than any killer!

"Hungry."

Or: "This is justified by Jesus."
Another post apocalyptic tale of vengeance and survival and, especially, the amenity between two small groups of people, one of which had been led by a man they called Priest until his execution by the other. This time, the destruction had been caused by nuclear explosions.

Vivid, no holds barred, text that makes The Road read like a gentle bed-time story, The Kindred includes stabbings, bludgeoning and splitting heads, rape, severed limbs and arteries, dark and dust, tunnels and murder, the cutting of throats, tumors and deformities, coughing blood, walls of twisted flesh, barking children and, of course, cannibalism.

Narration was by Clive Johnson whose voice was simply insufficiently sinister, with a slightly sing song timbre which became irritating as the book progressed. Another story and this would probably not have mattered, but here, amidst the dark and deprevation, it felt wrong.

My thanks to the rights holder of The Kindred, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. The contents are very dark with little to recommend for any sort of pleasurable enjoyment, not even prepper tips. This is a very bleak and distressing world

Let down by childish narration

I’m sure the narrator is a lovely guy, I really am. However, his style is wholeheartedly out of place here. It is a tremendous distraction, one dimensional and almost emotionless at times. I think the story demands a voice with a little more menace, gravity or charisma, and he just doesn’t have it. Consequently, this is quite a disappointment.
