About this listen

Audible narration by Steven Strait (The Expanse)

What’s more frightening: Not knowing who you are? Or finding out? A Bram Stoker Award-winning author explores the answer in a chilling story about identity and human consciousness.

Imagine you’ve woken up in an unfamiliar room with no memory of who you are, how you got there, or where you were before. All you have is the disconnected voice of an attentive caretaker. Dr. Kuhn is there to help you - physically, emotionally, and psychologically. She’ll help you remember everything. She’ll make sure you reclaim your lost identity. Now answer one question: Are you sure you want to?

Paul Tremblay’s The Last Conversation is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Predictable and derivative

It was....ok, I didn't hate it. The writing is ok, but there's nothing new or exciting here... I'd guessed what was going on quite early.
The delivery is flat and doesn't engage the reader in any tension, not that there's any tension there tbh

"Your room is dark, you are lying in bed ..."

Waking into total darkness, the subject of this rather creepy story has no idea of where, or who, they are. What's more, written in the second person, this isn't just some random protagonist, it is the reader themself, confused, trying to understand what has, and is, happening. There is pain and a single voice, encouraging, calling herself Ann, claiming to be helping a move to full recovery.

As the mystery progresses, though, there are things that things are not quite right, but what? Narration by Steven Strait is excellent, his gently spoken voice able to convey the fear and emotion felt in the struggle to recovery, the non understanding of all that happens. His is a fine and all encompassing performance. As slowly this story neared it's end, however, some questions began to break through the shell of total absorption and which, irritatingly, did not seem to be answered by the conclusion. Probably down to me but, because of this, I have it four stars instead of five. But a good four stars.

This was my first encounter with author Paul Tremblay. Most so called horror stories leave me cold but he seems to be a writer of some finesse and I will definitely seem out another of his works. Well worth a read - or, with the Audio book free with a kindle copy - a. listen..

Warning

I thought this was good but would have enjoyed it more if a PRAT on audible.com hadn't done a one line review that included the main spoiler of the story - so there was no intrigue what so ever for me. Hence the single purpose of this review is to say - don't look at audible.com reviews as you're very likely to have the story ruined for you also.

An interesting story!

I was intrigued from the get go, and I enjoyed how ominous this story was. Not only that, but Steven Strait is a phenomenal narrator. I enjoy his voice every single time, despite the characters in this sounding a little flat. Regardless, the ending was predictable but what led up to the ending was thoroughly brilliant.

wow

Paul Tremblay is definitely a new favourite author. He makes the most uncomfortable atmospheres. you feel what the characters feel, you feel their fear and their discomfort and their stress. Its rare to find someone to affects you in that way

Unsettling

In the current world climate, the theme of this book is quite unsettling, especially with the unusual 2nd person narrative. It's hard to say too much without spoiling the story, as it's the uncertainty that provides most of the intrigue but (... Minor spoilers follow ... ) the pay off is unexpected and smart, with an eerie sense of believability. However the open ending left many questions unanswered, such as why a certain character was seemingly unaffected. As a short story it delivers, but left me wanted more.
