About this listen
Nobody knows the seedy underbelly of Las Vegas like Daniel Faust, a sorcerer for hire and ex-gangster who uses black magic and bullets to solve his clients' problems. When an old man comes seeking vengeance for his murdered granddaughter, what looks like a simple job quickly spirals out of control.
Soon Daniel stands in the crossfire between a murderous porn director; a corrupt cop with a quick trigger finger; and his own former employer, a racket boss who isn't entirely human. Then there's Caitlin: brilliant, beautiful, and the lethal right hand of a demon prince.
A man named Faust should know what happens when you rub shoulders with demons. Still Daniel can't resist being drawn to Caitlin's flame as they race to unlock the secret of the Etruscan Box, a relic that people all over town are dying - and killing - to get their hands on. As the bodies drop and the double-crosses pile up, Daniel will need every shred of his wits, courage, and sheer ruthlessness just to survive.
Daniel Faust knew he was standing with one foot over the brink of hell. He's about to find out just how far he can fall.

Worst accents since Dick Van Dyke did Cockney
The story was spoiled for me by the narrators distractingly awful "foreign" accents. You'd think he'd at least listen to some examples and practice them a bit...

Scottish Brogue?!? /what accent?!
I enjoyed the plot, but as a Scot the narrators accents were awful, he should really research the accents being performed as a professional voice actor. Caitlin sounded like a bad Irish accent, rather than Scottish which she's supposed to be, wrong country. Mama's creole sounded more like Swedish also...

Great story...Okay narration but TERRIBLE accents!
What made the experience of listening to The Long Way Down the most enjoyable?
Good story, with great character development. FANTASTIC TWIST TOO..!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration is Okay...but the accents are just terrible.
The character that's meant to sound "Scottish" sounds like a bad mix of Irish and Cajun...! Others just sound like Disney characters (thinking Goofy here)
If you can ignore what the accents are "meant" to be it's easy enough to get passed it though.
Any additional comments?
Just picked up book 2 and looking forward to it.

If you like monologues ....
📚 A reddit rabbithole suggested the Daniel Faust series to fill the planet size gap left by Harry Dresden since 2020. It did not.
Once l stepped away from my disappointment, l listened to this for its own merits and l am still crushed. Info dumps abounded to explain every single person's motivations and to give Daniel the information he needed. Heroes, villains, victims, random side characters and even serpents in dreams got to monologue. Then there was a rushed romantic sub-plot between a rescuer and rescuee and the latter gave a lecture on the big conflict. Ultimately, l did not care about the protagonist or his quests and could not take him seriously when he gravely intoned "l am the bad guy".
🎧 Narrator was good with the hero who had a personable way and a mellow tone. His range could not, sadly, extend to differentiating women or ages or accents. Most egregious is that when dastardly deeds were unfolding, the narrator voiced villains from the Disney playbook (and another reason l could not take this book seriously). Still, three stars because Mr Verner was easy to listen to.
