I’m a fan of Harry Sidebottoms Balista series superb characters, excellent battle sequences and breathtaking historical detail. You always learn something with Harry’s books. Sadly this isn’t in the same league. It’s all a bit unconvincing and contrived. It’s a sort of dirty dozen story but Romans. The mystery of which of the group is the traitor actually becomes a little tedious and the ending somewhat surprising. Sometimes a narrator can make a weak novel so much better. Not this guy. He makes little attempt to distinguish the characters other than an all purpose “northern “ accent for the soldiers and some first year drama school voices for the others. I wanted this book to be better than it was!

I have read all of Harry's books and have loved them for the fast paced action and historical texture. Interwoven with this particular adventure are an exploration of Herodotus and of the religious and philosophical stew which people of every rank chose from.
The clever thing with Harry's stuff is that it works as pure entertainment with the added benefit of classical depth for those who are interested.

I’m think the story is a pretty good one but struggling to concentrate and follow the story due to the terrible speech patterns of the narrator.

I’m going to persevere and finish the book but I won’t be getting any more books read by him.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It felt like an SAS story set in Roman times. The narrator did a great job of making each character sound different which brought the book to life.

As a fan of The warriors of Rome series, I rushed to get this in the hope of a little entertainment. The narrator’s performance was terrible. I tried and tried to listen to it, even reducing the playback speed at one point, in an attempt to make it more tolerable. Finally I am leaving this book unfinished, which brought on a sense of release. It did feel like torture.
