Summary

Neve Connolly looks down at a murdered man.

She doesn't call the police.

‘You know, it’s funny,’ Detective Inspector Hitching said. ‘Whoever I see, they keep saying, talk to Neve Connolly, she’ll know. She’s the one people talk to, she’s the one people confide in.’

A trusted colleague and friend. A mother. A wife. Neve Connolly is all these things.

She has also made mistakes: some small, some unconsciously done, some large, some deliberate. She is only human, after all. But now one mistake is spiralling out of control, and Neve is bringing those around her into immense danger. She can’t tell the truth. So how far is she prepared to go to protect those she loves? And who does she really know?

And who can she trust?

A liar. A cheat. A threat.

Neve Connolly is all these things.

Could she be a murderer?

Critic reviews

“'The hook of The Lying Room is chilling: a woman discovers the dead body of a man she knows and doesn’t tell a soul...Nicci French remains one step ahead of us as we race to unpick Neve Connolly's deadly tangle. Expertly paced, psychologically sharp, thoroughly enjoyable." (Louise Candlish)

Total waste of time

Ludicrous plot - all cardboard characters. Nicci French is usually so good so rather a shame.

Slow down the narration, otherwise a great listen

I enjoyed this book whilst in lockdown at home. The narrator does speak very, very fast, however I slowed the speed of the narration down to 90% on my listening device and it was just right. I do prefer these stand alone stories from Nicci French rather than the Frieda Klein ones. This one kept me guessing.

LOVED IT

I’ve had so many disappointing books lately. This was great. Couldn’t stop listening. Flowed really well. So many different potential outcomes. Great book. Would definitely recommend!

Good story - but you will need to slow the speed

Story was good, a little drawn out and lots of similes (more than needed , in my opinion ).
But it was quite an enjoyable listen.
Narrator has a lovely voice, but read the story way to fast, had to adjust the speed a couple of times to slow it down. Attempts to distinguish voices didn’t work as well as planned.
The ending seemed to have been plucked from nowhere - as in, with all the character building it seemed strange

Worth a listen

Hard work

It took so long to get to the point that I would think of it as a psychological novel . not at all as I had expected.

Marred by over-fast narration

I was looking forward to this, but I'm sorry to say that I'm having trouble finishing it, for one reason: the performer goes through the text at such a rapid clip that it's quite tiring to listen to. You don't get time to absorb the story, or to get a sense of atmosphere; you just feel rushed. It's quite disappointing; I'd like to know what happens, but every time I think of listening to it again, I just don't feel like it.

Disappointing

I usually love anything written by Nicci French, but this time I was disappointed. I found this book overlong, with too much unnecessary detail about the minutiae of life. I liked the character of Neve but found some of the things she did totally unbelievable. The rest of the characters were mostly quite unpleasant! The policeman seemed like he was based on Colombo because he kept popping up in Neve's life at random moments.

The story itself was interesting though, and I didn't guess who the killer was.

bit dissapointed

am a massive Nicki French fan and had waited in anticipation for this but found it abit daft in places and the story was dissapointing. the narrator was fairly monotone with some breathy bits during the tense parts.
