About this listen

The life and work of the legendary "Pope of Voodoo", Marie Laveau - a free woman of color who practically ruled New Orleans in the mid-1800s

Marie Laveau may be the most influential American practitioner of the magical arts; certainly, she is among the most famous. She is the subject of songs, films, and legends and the star of New Orleans ghost tours. Her grave in New Orleans ranks among the most popular spiritual pilgrimages in the US. Devotees venerate votive images of Laveau, who proclaimed herself the "Pope of Voodoo." She is the subject of respected historical biographies and the inspiration for novels by Francine Prose and Jewell Parker Rhodes. She even appears in Marvel Comics and on the television show American Horror Story: Coven, where she was portrayed by Angela Bassett.

Author Denise Alvarado explores Marie Laveau's life and work - the fascinating history and mystery. This book gives an overview of New Orleans Voodoo, its origins, history, and practices. It contains spells, prayers, rituals, recipes, and instructions for constructing New Orleans voodoo-style altars and crafting a voodoo amulet known as a gris-gris.

Highly recommend

This is my first book that I've read on the topic of both Marie Laveou and Voodoo practices. This isn't a path I currently follow but it's an area that I have a keen interest for, which is what drew me to pick up this book.

I really enjoyed this book and found that the author went into great details in all aspects a d areas discussed.

The first part of the book discusses who Marie laveou was and her history and legacy. I found this very interesting and was one of the main features that drew me to this book. I had come across Marie laveou in TV shows and films but wanted to know more about her true story. This part of the book didn't disappoint.

The second part of the book discusses becoming a devote to Marie laveou. I myself am not sure at this point I'm my path whether or not this I a direction I will take however I really liked the way the author laid this out. It's clear to see this is not just a quick way to work with her and there are many layers and steps before hand which the author clearly goes through each step and really puts across the high respect needed for this path and how it's a way of life in all aspects of how you live. I feel this part was very interesting and it made me think more about devotional work in my current path and really developing my approach to that.

The final part of the book goes through several rituals and rites and spells for various different aspects of life.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and found that it went into great detail in many areas. I'll definitely be looking into more books by this author in the future.

Couldn't finish

Even though I think the book is very interesting, I couldn't stand the narrator, and therefore I couldn't for my life finish the book. I'll think I have to get the book on Kindle instead.

overall a good listen

At times it stands high on the soap box Especially when discussing racisl and sexual politics. At other times the information given is vague. However still a reasonably good listen, with a solid grounding. All in I did not regret purchasing it.

Hail the queen!

Loved hearing all about the queen herself! It made me really want to visit New Orleans and walk in her footsteps, she sounded amazing, what a wonderful, kind, loving soul! The narrator was a tad irritating but I loved the book and hearing all about her style of voodoo too!
