About this listen

It could be worse. You could be stuck with a literal shoulder demon.

After dying and being reborn into a world that's built like a video game, Jim has found himself stuck in a very old-world style new-player zone for low-level adventurers. Unfortunately, the zone fell out of use centuries ago, and no one told the monsters they were supposed to take it easy on the Noobs. Even worse, the only new player around is Jim.

Jim has been given an opportunity, and he'll do his best to take advantage of it.

Hilarious

Great lighthearted fun. The narrator did a flawless job and I barely have any complaints about the story.

Fantastic!

A great story of a new life after death. It’s a great story, laced with wicked humour, and the narrator reads it all with a voice perfect for the story.

Funny, but not sure it's quite enough

The author has clearly gone for comedy value and with the narrators dead pan style, it does kinda work.
I'm just not sure the story has enough to it to keep my hooked. Like any genre, the litrpg genre has some truly great works and some absolute dross; this isn't either of those, but clearly falls somewhere in the middle.

I'll probably try the next instalment, but I'm not rushing into it.

Loved every second.

I got this book because of a YouTube video, and I can honestly say, that I'm glad that I followed the advice. LitManTuck sent me.

This book was amazing!!! I am probably going to listen twice!

Solid LitRPG

I'll start with performance and then talk about the story.

Performance
Starting the book, I was uncertain with the narrator, something about his accent didn't sit well. After 5 minutes however I was entirely sold on him. His accent is perfect for the character and for the book, he knows how to lean into the mood of the book and his performance reflects the attitude and tone of the character precisely. I wouldn't necessarily give the narrator 5*s in every book, but he was so well suited for this one I had to give him a 5th star.

Story:
Overall the story is rather average, person from our world discovers themselves in an RPG world but has one special power. For me this would still be a recommend read but a 3* rather than 4. Why the fourth? Partly is that character fails, while they have a special power its such that it doesn't make them invincible and one wrong move can easily lead to their demise. The story also does one thing few LitRPGs I've read do and this is give the character something they have lost. The MC wasn't someone in their early 20's obsessed with D&D or computer games, un-content with their life but was instead a regular person with a family who found themselves in a situation they can never go back from. That the MC occasionally looks back at what they had before missing their family. These aspects of the story really do help to add an extra layer and I hope they continue to affect the character in later books.

Well crafted game lit

If you like the genre, this is definitely one of the better ones; which is down to a mixture of things, the protagonist is likeable, genuine feeling like an intelligent man thrown into a ridiculous situation, and moans about things to an acceptable degree. Shart is great fun. The trials facing the main character make sense for his situation and level. But above all, apart from a few instances, the story and writing flow really well, which is where so many fall down.

Worth it, if you want a bit of fun, easy listening.

something a little different

I liked the d&d style to the story. Quite funny in places.
Jim is a good hero. His demonic sidekick a good foul.
Potentially a good series, I will definitely read more.

Could be better

Good story and world building but spends way to long on stats I feel like you could take 30/40min off this book if they got removed

Pretty decent for LitRPG

This wasn't the most groundbreaking or thought provoking story I've ever read. The MC is a bit of an asshole as per normal. The set-up at the start is clunky and badly handled as normal. Then the MC gets a load of cool abilities for no reason.

Honestly, this was just a nice book to have on in the background while I got stuff done. Audio is good.

Great Dry Sense of Humour and fitting Performer

Love this series, the Adventures of Jim ..

Johnathan McClain's style reminds me of Larry Miller, I do keep expecting the phrase "Lets drive to Mexico!", especially as Jim has a demon on his shoulder.

Wonderfully dry comedy and great series.
