Summary

People disappear. Secrets remain....

My Dearest T, Whatever you hear, do not believe it for a moment....

1940: In south-west Ireland, the young and beautiful Lady Charlotte Rathmore is pronounced dead after she mysteriously disappears by the lake of Blackwater Hall. In London, on the brink of the Blitz, Nancy Rathmore is grieving Charlotte's death when a letter arrives containing a secret that she is sworn to keep—one that will change her life forever.

2019: Decades later, Ellie Fitzgerald is forced to leave Dublin disgraced and heartbroken. Abandoning journalism, she returns to rural Kerry to weather out the storm. But, when she discovers a faded letter, tucked inside the pages of an old book, she finds herself drawn in by a long-buried secret. And as Ellie begins to unravel the mystery, it becomes clear that the letter might hold the key to more than just Charlotte's disappearance.

An unforgettable and spellbinding story of secrets, war, love and sacrifice, perfect for listeners of Kate Morton, Eve Chase and Louise Douglas.

A bit predictable

And far too many references to coffee! Very slow to start, but does improve if you stick with it.

Painful Irish accent.

An Irish narrator would have been better. It was really hard to take the story seriously when I kept cringing at her accent and mispronounciation. For example Gardaí (Irish Police) is pronounced " Gard ee" not " Gard eye". Advice on accent would have helped.
Other than that the story was enjoyable and beautifully written.

Give it a chance…..

Nearly gave up a few times at the start of this book as the narrator has quite an annoying way of storytelling & the accents are bad. However the story is beautiful so it’s worth listening to.

Irish accent is painful

The Irish accent is atrocious but love the story, pity about the accent makes it hard to listen to especially if your from Ireland.

loved this book

Beautifully written, loved the Narrator's voice...found some of the Irish accents a little overdone! I've recommended this book to friends

Totally engrossing story

A totally engrossing story. Beautifully constructed with interesting characters and lots of intrigue. However it was totally spoiled by the narrator's interpretation of an Irish accent, which was appalling to listen to.

The " Irish " accent was unnecessarily shouted and spoken in a drawn out, over emphasised slow manner. It was verging on comical, which was very distracting in this otherwise stunning audio book. The narrator seemed to settle down about two hours from the end of the book, the raised voice toned down with just the odd over emphasised "Ori-sh" word used. I had thought I had become accustomed to the narration so checked back to the beginning, no it had been embarrassingly awful.

It is such a pity as the narration was otherwise excellent.

If you have good knowledge of Irish accents maybe a good choice would be to buy the book to read, as it is an absolutely superb story.

Such an interesting story

This book has an intriguing story line and I couldn’t stop listening - one of those stories that goes back in history and is easy to visualise the characters. Really enjoyed the narration
