About this listen

‘Vivid and compelling’ Rosamund Lupton, bestselling author of Three Hours

A house stands alone in the woods.

Deep in the forests of Norway, Lexi finds a fresh start with Tom and his two young daughters, working as their new nanny.

The darkness creeps closer.

But Lexi is telling lies, and she’s not the only one. This family has a history – and this place has a past. Something was destroyed to build this house, and in the dark, dark woods, a menacing presence lurks.

Lexi must protect the children in her care – but protect them from what?

Atmospheric, gothic, spine-chilling, the new thriller from C.J Cooke will haunt you long after you turn the last page . . .

...almost returned it buttock with it and actually, throughly enjoyed it. Superb narration helped!
Not my usual fodder at all but I think I might highly recommend this book.

Love how CJ Cooke really grips me and keeps me listening (or turning the page) depending on how you are reading this book

Smashing book

I found the pacing to be fantastic. It's a main character you want to root for, and the story is rich in description and atmosphere. The narration was great, with the range of accents adding quality.

atmospheric masterpiece

Wonderful story narrated beautifully by Aysha Kala. I enjoyed the imagery conveyed by the writing very much .

Magical and disturbing in equal measures

Listened to The Lighthouse Witches and The Ghost Woods previously. Both by the same author. Those were really good in terms of the story and performance.
Felt this dragged and lacked pace. Didn’t enjoy it anywhere near as much

Lacked pace, not as good as The Ghost Woods

Interesting parts were fleeting and the ending was very rushed. Shame. It had potential.

Dragged on.

This was an interesting story with some Norwegian folklore woven through it. Narration was solid throughout, not jarring or distracting. A good listen

Unusual story unpredictable to the end

I enjoyed this book enormously. The writing is absolutely phenomenal & the narrator was perfect. Clever, creepy & highly original, I can't recommend this highly enough.

Sensational

I enjoyed the first dozen or so chapters but the story became stale and the narration became irritating.

I came back to it hoping to be re inspired but the lack of direction made me give up at chapter 25 sorry but it was a bit slow and unconvincing for me

promising but disappointed

this book was actually brilliant, it was atmospheric and beautiful (topic withstanding) But the absolute standout was the narrator! her narration for the story was perfection. I will be keeping an eye on the author and the narrator for more tales
