Summary
In a Yorkshire Dales village everyone has a motive for murder - except the killer.
A retired judge is shot dead outside the Dog and Gun inn in the remote Yorkshire village of Niddersgill. There's a witness who saw everything, and the gunman's on the run; the case should be open-and-shut for DCI Jim Oldroyd. But the murderer had no motive for wanting Sandy Fraser dead and, what's more, no trace of him can be found.
As Oldroyd and his team cast the net wider, they discover that Fraser wasn't without enemies in Niddersgill. As the wealthy owner of a grouse moor, he'd clashed with farmers, debtors, hunt saboteurs and blackmailers. But none of them were at the scene of the murder. And when a local shopkeeper is gunned down in a second senseless attack, it's clear that these killings are anything but random.
Surrounded by the dramatic beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, Oldroyd faces a race against time to connect the crimes and find who's behind them. But with all the evidence sending him down dead ends, can he get one step ahead before someone else is killed?

“Revenge”.
The story in this latest episode of The Yorkshire Murders series was entertaining. As with the previous audiobooks in the series it had a number of twists and turns.
I also liked how you had to wait until the end before finding out who the murderer was. I was slightly disappointed by the ending as it came across as a bit of a farce.
I find the narrator, Michael Page, difficult to listen to. He tends to speak in a monologue and his accents leave much to be desired.

DCI Holroyd No.5
Excellent read yet again kept you guessing until the end. The characters are also growing and taking shape, I am pleased that Holroyd has a personal life now and is becoming real with a sense of humour even started to write poetry. Looking forward to book 6.

Love this series
This is the fifth book in the series and I have enjoyed them all. Stories hold your attention and with some humour. I have heard the reader do other books and would not believe it the same person

I think I’d like to meet this author
I had enjoyed the previous books in this series but I particularly liked this one with its involved plot and interesting characters and the author’s obvious delight in the landscape but what rendered it especially enjoyable for me, an animal loving, animal rescuing vegan, is that the author didn’t harangue against sabs, didn’t call them antis which only pro hunting/shooting people do, and seemed to be on the side of those of us who find the slaughter of any creatures for “sport” totally abhorrent. I also like the fact that vegetarians weren’t dismissed as idiot weirdos.
I did wonder if some of those critical reviewers were reacting to Mr Ellis’s lack of antipathy towards animal loving activists. Carry on writing Mr Ellis and I shall shortly be listening to The Whitby Murders and pre-ordering Murder at St Anne’s.

Another very interesting and entertaining yarn
J R Ellis has created another engaging mystery story containing the usual mix of local Yorkshire knowledge swirled with very believable characters, and a plot full of twists and turns. As always, most enjoyable. The performance by Michael Page just adds greatly to the experience. Well done to both author and performance artist.
