Summary
The riveting novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Liar.
“She stood in the deep, dark woods, breath shallow and cold prickling over her skin despite the hot, heavy air. She took a step back, then two, as the urge to run fell over her.”
Naomi Bowes lost her innocence the night she followed her father into the woods. In freeing the girl trapped in the root cellar, Naomi revealed the horrible extent of her father’s crimes and made him infamous. No matter how close she gets to happiness, she can’t outrun the sins of Thomas David Bowes.
Now a successful photographer living under the name Naomi Carson, she has found a place that calls to her, a rambling old house in need of repair, thousands of miles away from everything she’s ever known. Naomi wants to embrace the solitude, but the kindly residents of Sunrise Cove keep forcing her to open up - especially the determined Xander Keaton.
Naomi can feel her defenses failing, and knows that the connection her new life offers is something she’s always secretly craved. But the sins of her father can become an obsession, and, as she’s learned time and again, her past is never more than a nightmare away.

This is become one of my favourite stories of all time!
This book was perfection to me. It had everything I didn’t know I needed from a story. It was so well written and wholesome. The characters were extremely lovable and the narration was absolutely incredible!! Shannon McManus was so fantastic! She really brought these characters and this story to life!

Feel-good classic Nora Roberts
Shannon McManus delivers the story with perfection. You know what you’re getting with Nora Roberts: exquisite descriptive writing, a ‘good dog’, strong characterisation and small town America.

ok but not her best
Follows the general Nora Roberts formula, but several scenes have been lifted straight out of previous books. Maybe I've got used to the tension and suspense in her J D Robb books, but I found the storyline bland and the passion between the characters lacking.
Narration was not bad, but it was difficult to hear the difference between characters in conversations as her female voices sounded too similar.
Overall ok, but not a patch on her Chesapeake novels or the High Noon era writing.

Brilliant book
Spent too much time listening to this story and enjoying the plot. Wasn’t a difficult plot. But a simple enjoyable story. Not too much violence or sex for me. A good book for filling up the hours.

Standard Nora
Another typical Nora Roberts. If you're in the mood for soppy romance with a bit of crime/mystery on the side, it's perfect!

Good listen.
Interest is maintained by the story and the performance. Now the nights are drawing in, this a good "snuggle down with" book.

Nora Roberts on form
Nora Roberts’ tomes are undeniably formulaic. When they’re on point, they keep up an absorbing amount of jeopardy related to a nefarious threat to a likeable protagonist who is also endeavouring to build a new life and establish love despite tumult from the past bleeding into the preset. One is, also happily guaranteed a satisfying ending.
The Obsession delivers where some more recent listens have been somewhat flaccid and distinctly lacking in tension.
My personal tastes is for less graphic and really heinous suffering meted out to victims. The crimes described in The Obsession are undeniably grim but the sadistic cruelty isn’t as relentless as in, for example, Come Sundown. It’s nasty stuff but all in all this is a tauter, tighter listen than some, and the better for it.
Recommended as a good Roberts, not as brilliant, as for example, The Witness, but absolutely worth a listen.
