Summary
A Rivers of London novella, from Sunday Times Number One bestselling author Ben Aaronovitch.
Trier is famous for wine, Romans and for being Germany's oldest city. So when a man is found dead with, his body impossibly covered in a fungal rot, the local authorities know they are out of their depth.
Fortunately this is Germany, where there are procedures for everything.
Enter Investigator Tobias Winter, whose aim is to get in, deal with the problem, and get out with the minimum of fuss, personal danger and paperwork. With the help of frighteningly enthusiastic local cop, Vanessa Sommer, he's quick to link the first victim to a group of ordinary middle-aged men - and to realise they may have accidentally reawakened a bloody conflict from a previous century. But the rot is still spreading, literally and with the suspect list extending to people born before Frederick the Great solving the case may mean unearthing the city's secret magical history.
. . . so long as that history doesn't kill them first.
Discover why this incredible series has sold over two million copies around the world. If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams - don't panic - you will love Ben Aaronovitch's imaginative, irreverent and all-round irresistible novels.

Tobias Winter meets Peter Grant????
Excellent all round. Sam Peter Jackson’s performance as Tobias is as good as Kobna’s Peter Grant. I like the references to The Folly and events in London as they tie the stories together and the only open question is when/how will Peter and Tobias work together on a case.

Confusing but OK
I looked forward to listening to this but ended up confused and wishing I’d read the actual book. It is difficult to follow at times. But it follows a familiar path and I enjoyed it on the whole.

A nice change of pace
While the Peter Grant series becomes more florid and slightly self-referential (though still great fun), this has a dry tone which makes a welcome contrast. The narration is perfectly suited. I hope there will be more from this strand.

Fruity little German number
A German spin off didn’t particularly appeal but turns out it was a really good idea.
The story references incidents and characters we already know but is freed from the ongoing narratives of the London books.
The magical themes are familiar yet also enlivened by being let loose in a wider environment.
My brain zoned out over the (rather extensive) variety of German police titles but the clipped, monotone narrator was well chosen. He’s not Kobna but this isn’t a Peter Grant book.
Bit puzzled by the title but the story is a nice detour from the London saga, which has headed off into a bit of a domestic cul de sac.
More please - and full length.

good, but not a Peter Grant book
this is a new series with me location and characters... it's good but not the same, not akin to a normal police drama than a Peter Grant book.

good not great
this is different from the Peter Grant novels, lacking the humour really. Good story and narration but not Kobna standard

the counterpart
totally took me by surprise, I was taken aback to start with it not being kobna narrating but it's a different wizard so of course its not !
actually loved this look at the other side of the wizarding world and look forwards to them - (I'm assuming here) - colliding at some point in the future.

A Brilliant Stand-alone to the Rivers of London
It takes a few minutes to adjust to the lack of Kobna's Peter Grant, when you do it is very good indeed. Great stuff Ben. Narration was fantastic.

Hard work
Good stand alone story (from the same universe but not featuring Peter Grant) but I did find the dry German accented narration hard work.

A good listen
Ben Aaronovitch obviously researches his subject well and it adds a lot to the story. This was a good listen just not long enough. Hope he writes more for these characters and Peter Grant. Better get busy Ben lol.
