About this listen
Science fiction with a dystopian, post-apocalyptic twist, listen to the complete Planetsider Trilogy as a single boxed set.
No.1 Best Seller in Space Opera Science Fiction
From book 1:
Ethan is a ranger, sworn to protect his walled settlement from the dangers of his ravaged wasteland planet. One night, a mysterious light thunders overhead and Ethan investigates, discovering a crashed spacecraft and two soldiers from a moon base he didn’t even know existed. Captain Salus and Commander Kurren have risked everything to find a Planetsider to help save their people. Ethan needs them to answer questions that have haunted him all his life – what happened to his world and why?
Seduced by the prospect of learning the truth, Ethan agrees to help Captain Salus and Commander Kurren. Disobeying the orders of his council, he travels to the UEC outpost on the moon. There Ethan gets his answers, but the truth only leads to more questions and more doubts.
To make matters worse, Kurren and Salus are not the only ones looking for a Planetsider. An enemy faction, trapped on an orbital space station, will stop at nothing to capture Ethan, and prevent him from helping the UEC. With time running out to save the moon base, Ethan agrees to embark on a dangerous mission to recover vital technology set adrift in a radiation field that only a Planetsider can survive.
But his ship is intercepted by the rival faction and Ethan is taken to the space station. There he meets the faction’s leader, who turns his life upside down and inside out. Everything he thought he knew was a lie.
Plucked from a life of ignorance and obscurity, Ethan is thrust into the center of a war that has raged for over a century – a war that created the world he grew up in. Yet fate has a cruel sense of irony, because now the survival of two entire civilizations rests in the hands of a solitary Planetsider.
An edge-of-your-seat blend of Mil-SF action & classic apocalyptic science fiction. Perfect for fans of space opera and classic apocalyptic sci-fi.
Finalist in the Independent Audiobook Awards 2020 (Apocalyptica).

Good basic storyline!

Best book I read in a long time 👌

The narrator has quite a pleasant voice when reading the narrative passages and I enjoyed that aspect of his performance but most of the voices he uses for the characters are really annoying. I mean no disrespect, but I found myself skipping past some of the character interaction because of this. He generally uses a vaguely Homer Simpson like voice for many of the males which makes them sound stupid and whiny. The voices he uses for the women are not great either being high-pitch or just sounding like a man and usually sounding snarky or arrogant. It also sounds like he is trying to imitate someone shouting from a distance away for both men and women.
Story
The plot is quite good, though a bit depressing and while not especially original, it moves along quickly enough. I like the first book in the trilogy most and the second one the least although these are just personal preferences. Its light on detail in order to keep the plot moving along and while this generally works, it means the story lacks depth and character development. There are also a few rather large plot holes but I tried to roll with those and suspend my disbelief.
Characters
This is where it falls down the most. Even though the protagonist is a male, it always feels like the main women are better than him and he is surplus to requirements. They are better fighters than he is, know more than and are more intelligent. It makes him unappealing as a "hero”, he doesn't often get to "shine" and he has limited character development.
I don't know if it was the way the narrator read it or if it was planned but the main female characters were obnoxious and unlikeable making stupid decisions while maintaining a rather arrogant demeanour. "Sal" starts off quite likeable but by the middle of the third story she had become quite annoying although not as bad as "Summer" who is a Mary-Sue with no likeable qualities whatsoever. Even minor female characters seem to be able to do anything such as a young politician who can fight, do technical and fly spaceships while being a brilliant diplomat (trying to avoid spoilers so will leave details out). Most of the male characters are one dimensional and dumb as rocks so perhaps the “Homer” voice the narrator uses is appropriate.
Summary
Despite these shortcomings, the story was interesting enough to keep me going until the end and it wasn’t terrible by any means. However, I'm not likely to buy another book by this author or with this narrator without careful research.
