Summary
FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES
An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!
Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Just finished it - didn't see the ending coming...
I've listen to other Michael Connelly books and found them to be a bit too slick. The hero is slightly too good, too clever, too lucky.
This book, however, gave me a main character with many realistic flaws. He didn't seem to spot the twist at the end anymore than I did!
Perhaps because I was a journalist for much of my professional life I can relate to this book more than some others, but I think this is one of Michael Connolly's best, and there's less blood'n'guts'n'gore, which I prefer.

Brilliant, well written, edge of seat
This is a well written and tense story. Very well narrated. Absolutely could not stop listening to it, in the car, at work, in traffic and even making coffee. Looking forward to listening to the sequel....yes there is another one!! Michael Connelly writes superbly and his books are so well narrated that you want to listen to them all the time.

Almost perfect
If I had read this when it was written over 25years ago, I might have been blown away by the plot and the outcome. With the amazing leaps and bounds in modern technology and therefore modern stories, I feel that an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 is a true reflection of my enjoyment. Maybe we are spoilt by the surfet of excellence now available!

Good twist at the end,
I enjoyed the drama and suspense, not keen on the paedophile theme, probably wouldn't have bought it if I'd known but once started.... also I'm a bit of a happy ending kind of person so would have liked the villain caught but overall a good listen

An excellent listen
The first of a new character, Jack McEvoy, but the same superbly crafted Michael Connelly novel! I've got the Mickey Haller audibles available already and decided to take a punt on this and it's so good I've downloaded the scarecrow.
Harry Bosch series next!!!!
Superb

Clockwork Connelly
As usual plotted like a Swiss watch. if one part was a mm out of alignment it wouldn't work. But none are and it does. No florid rhetorical flourishes, just hard driving, forward moving effective storytelling. Whatever is the audio equivalent of a page turner, this it it.

Classic Connelly
Fan of all his work. Nice when he does a stand-alone rather than a series. A good story, good narrative.
