Summary

It has almost been 300 years since Sir Robert Walpole arguably became the first holder of the office of prime minister in 1721 - an office which today is under scrutiny like never before.

The Prime Ministers, edited by leading political commentator Iain Dale, brings to life all 55 of Britain's 'First Among Equals' with an essay for each office holder, written by key figures in British politics. From the obscure 18th-century figures like the earl of Shelburne to 20th-century titans like Churchill and Thatcher, this audiobook provides a much-needed reminder about their motivations, failures and achievements.

Could be better

A most interesting account of this important subject Blemished by the uneven quality of the writing, and the frequently lamentable quality of the reading

Fantastic Read

Iain Dale does himself credit with a wonderfully edited, intelligent and purposeful piece of political analysis. I had the preconception that Dale was a liberal leftwinger closed to any form of understanding of why the UK left the EU. I was expecting criticism abound of Conservative Prime Ministers but in fairness to the author he metes out praise and criticism in equal measures regardless of the political party they represent. This is a fascinating book and definitely one of the best reads on audible. Thank you Sir.

Narration by a hungover geography teacher

Iain Dale has many talents but sadly they do not include performing his own work!

Mixed Bag

Short chapters which I would have liked to have been a bit longer especially the more modern PM’s of the Twentieth century. I had to look up professor Google to obtain more details of the earlier PMS. On the whole an okay read.

Real Insight in our History.

Really enjoying "The Prime MInisters". A real insight into our history. Well read, easy listening by Iain Dale. Listening alongside the Podcast of the same name. Best chapter so far is one written by Damian Collins on Lloyd. George.

Superb Start

Really good story. Early chapters were extremely well thought out and inspiring. Unfortunately the author appears to have lost interest in the novel by the end, with ever increasing levels of absurdity in the characters.

By the end even the storyline begins to come apart. May, Johnson and the Brexit and Coronoviris threads are totally unbelievable and the reader has to suspend their disbelief to even get through it. I think it would have been better if the book had stopped after Gladstone, or maybe Churchill.

I look forward to the next in the series.

Flawed presentation of excellent concept

So the concept is great - potted histories of each of the UKs PM's, edited by one of our foremost political hacks - it's just it would've been great if he'd read them 1st before recording it. It just sounds like he's reading the text having just got it in the post a minute beforehand. Really offputting. Needs rerecording......

Significant bias yet nonetheless informative

There is a right wing slant to this novel and tendency to defend the British Establishment - occasionally favouring or ignoring some of Britain's dark past. Reading quality varies - some stuttering but mostly clear and relaxing. The book is accurate and Dale and all contributors have added a significant amount of detail to my historical knowledge.

Excellent overview of britains pms

Excellent book and good that you can dip into PMs of interest and understand a bit more about them. I’ve already brought my father in law the paperback version. Will be looking at the others ie Presidents of USA - as that will become a useful resource too. Please update when possible to over the 56 & 57th prime minister’s when the time is right
