About this listen

Every country is built on revolution.

THE WARDEN. Soren is a nameless, stateless man, tasked with keeping watch over Maricol’s borders. He isn’t meant for politics, only dealing with the dead. His past was buried in the poison fields, but after a fateful encounter with a prince, Soren comes to realize he can’t keep what magic burns inside him hidden forever.

THE PRINCE. Vanya Sa’Liandel was the spare who survived the Houses’ murderous games to become the Imperial crown prince of Solaria. He has a duty to his country, but he’ll owe his life to the wardens. Payment of any kind is costly, especially when he’s at risk of losing his heart to the man who saved his life.

THE COG. Caris Dhemlan hears the siren song of clarion crystals better than anyone in Ashion. That skill for inventing has enriched her bloodline, but it’s who she can become that will ultimately entangle her with the Clockwork Brigade.

THE PRINCESS. Eimarille Rourke should have been raised to be queen of one country; instead, she is prisoner of another. Guided by a star god, Eimarille bides her time in a gilded cage, spinning a political web to gain a throne and start a war the world isn’t ready for.

Steampunk. Queer. Fantasy.
Hold my coat I'm going in.

Wow. That really was epic.
There's destruction of a royal line and hidden royal children, a power struggle, magic! I'm breathless.
Turner's world building is excellent as usual.
Points to note:
* the first portion can feel quite overwhelming. Persevere, it's worth it.
* ends on a cliffhanger
* multi pov
* an epic fantasy with queer relationships but not a romance. Although, the existing relationship (m/m) is beautifully written, the chapters where they were forced apart by a secret war neither wanted a part of actually made me cry.
Excellent narrator on the audiobook gave certain scenes extra depth.
Highly recommended

Steampunk MM series

A great start to a new series by Hailey Turner. Her worldbuilding goes above and beyond, and you can imagine yourself amongst the drama living with the Clockwork Brigade or any other group.

During this book, there is little romance as Hailey has taken the time to set up the series, from the war and the saving of the princess Caris, then jumping 15 years to when she is old enough to become involved in society. People start to be interested in who she really is, unbeknown to her, as she was brought up in another family.

The story is well told by Gary Furlong, his ability to do all the voices is incredible. It totally made the audio experience.

Wonderfully intriguing with incredible world-building. I enjoyed the listen very much. The characters were nuanced, with lovely layers to unfold. I’ll be looking for more of this author’s work. Gary Furlong did a fantastic job narrating.

I don't usually read fantasy novels, but I'm glad I gave this one a try because it was fascinating! I thought the concept of a poisoned land with royals who can wield starfire was really interesting, and I'm impressed by how Hailey Turner executed a story with so many intricate, moving pieces. In the beginning I was a little overwhelmed by how many distinct charcters were introduced, but I put the pieces together surprisingly fast and was able to immerse myself in the blend of politics, magic, and science that made this story so unique. The way this book followed multiple intersecting storylines kinda reminded me of Game of Thones or Wheel of Time, but with more open LGBT themes and retrofuturistic tech. I'm intrigued by the way each star god seems to have chosen one of the Rourke siblings as their champion, and the setup is already in place for a fierce clash once the truth is revealed. If gods and destiny aren't your thing, then get ready for the mysterious and horrific experiments being carried out on debt slaves, a secret rebellion, and the ever-changing web of political alliances and enemies that left my favorite characters one wrong move away from a deadly betrayal.

A thrilling first installment

First, unless you have already read the book (or have a copy nearby), you are probably going to want a pen/pencil and pad of paper on hand to jot down all the names, places, nationalities, alliances, etc. so you can refer to them as you listen. I love this author’s complex and engaging writing, but there is a tremendous amount of information dropped in the early chapters. It can be daunting, but you’ll be rewarded if you carry on.

I loved the story and all the drama, betrayals, intrigue, and political machinations. I won’t say much about the plot or characters, because a review could never begin to do justice to the characters, world-building or action going on. You have to experience it for yourself. I will say that the world-building is phenomenal, the characters are complex and detailed, and the action is heart-pounding, sometimes tragic, and full of twists and turns. I am eagerly waiting for the next book.

The narration by Gary Furlong is fantastic. He is a master of his craft and his narration is always smooth and flawless. It creates a wonderful, immersive experience for the listener.

Fantastic start to a new steampunk fantasy series

It’s amazing to see how Ms Turner’s talent as a writer has grown and developed over the past couple of years, from her Metahuman series to Soulbound and now Infernal War Saga 1, her storylines and characters have become more complex and imaginative.
The Prince’s Poisoned Vow was hard work and confusing for me to start with as there are so many characters to get to grips with, switching from one pov to the next made it difficult to connect and then I had forgotten who was who for a while.
The world building as usual is impeccable and if you love intrigue, mystery and political games you will love this.
Definitely a book to listen to when you have the time and concentration to appreciate it but once you get to grips with everyone it flows and your attention is caught.
As always Gary Furlong is top notch in his narration. He always scores 5*

I've always admired Hailey's eye for detail and clearly extensive research for her worlds and stories but I think this one is in a world of its own!

You are transported into a dystopic world we're the dead rise, the world is poisoned and a bloodline wiped out in war. it is a very complex story with so many moving parts, so many "main" characters it can be hard to tell whose who and where you are but each character become clearer as the story develops and their hearts are shown.

I'm so enthralled in the intricate web of deception and deceit, I don't know where Hailey will take this story but omg I'm on the edge of my seat to find out!

And in true Hailey style, she leaves us on the edge of our seats, with our head full of questions and our hearts ready to beat out of our chests with that ending!

I'm totally hooked!!

A completely different world!

I am a huge fan of Hailey Turner and after reading series after series I expect any new series anxiously and this new book didn't disappoint. The story has a captivating plot, wonderful and complex characters, a lot of danger and intrigue, but love and trust fought to win and of course all the steam and hidden romance made the fight worthy. This amazing universe read by Ms. Furlong got an extra, because he made everything even better with his smooth and lovely voice and wonderful acting skills. A wonderful book, beautifully read! Simply... Loved it!
