About this listen

Over the millennia, the great thinkers of the world have sought to come up with rules for how to live better lives, how to govern better, and how to understand the world around us. As they have written down their thoughts, they have discovered laws and techniques that can help further advance human thought and explain why the world is the way it is today.

This fascinating introduction to the world of philosophy will help make even the most complex ideas accessible to everyone.

In this book you will learn about:

  • The different schools of philosophy which have held sway over the years.
  • The most influential philosophers in history.
  • The key concepts in every area ranging from ethics to metaphysics to epistemology.

Baskerville Book Reviews

I’m not entirely sure what to say about books like this, as it’s not my usual listen. Overall, I found it enjoyable and insightful to listen to. I appreciate the many examples that were provided throughout the book.

One section, toward the end, made me reconsider how I view the concept of ownership of land. I changed my view of ownership of anything many years ago. I “owned” a 1956 Packard Executive, a pretty rare car, that had been around for far longer than I have. And I stopped thinking of myself as its “owner” and more its “Current owner/caretaker”. Or I’d refer to myself as “I’m its owner, right now. It’s been around for 60 years, and it’s my job to make sure it lands another 60.”

The concept of claiming ownership of land, due to the work you put into it to make it livable was an example that resonated with me and made sense. Another fact about my life; I’m a Wiki editor. I spend most of my free time documenting the things I’m passionate about. And I’ve taken over control of several of my wikis, and I consider them my wikis. I tell people; If the original creators gave a fuck about these projects, they wouldn’t have abandoned them. I may not have been the creator, but I’ve put more work into them than anybody, and they now belong to me. When that section about land ownership came up, the example was something I could relate to personally.

The narration was excellent. While I did find it a bit dull at times, I also realize that’s in comparison with the romance, fantasy books, and documentaries I usually listen to. It does sound like a lecture at times, so it may be worth listening to it over a few days, as opposed to one sitting at 2.55x speed as I did.

As I mentioned previously; I don’t usually listen to philosophy books, so take this as a rec. from somebody unfamiliar with the genre. If you’re an avid philosophy reader/listener, your results may vary, as to be expected.
