Summary

Everyone who goes to Zallindov dies. Everyone, that is, except Kiva. Lynette Noni weaves a masterful and action-packed narrative that will take listeners on a roller coaster of twists, turns and thrills and sweep them up in a love story for the ages.

At Zalindov, the only person you can trust is yourself.

Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan is a survivor. For ten years, she has worked as the healer in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, making herself indispensable. Kept afloat by messages of hope from her family, Kiva has one goal and one goal only: stay alive.

Then one day the infamous Rebel Queen arrives at the prison on death's door and Kiva receives a new message: Don't let her die. We are coming.

The queen is sentenced to the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals. Aware the sickly queen has little chance of making it through the Trials alive, Kiva volunteers to take her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom.

But no one has ever survived.

And with an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva's heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can't escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.

From bestselling Australian author Lynette Noni comes a masterful and action-packed YA fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Sabaa Tahir.

No longer invested after the ending

To start, I wasn’t really a fan of the narration, Mot was particularly annoying (some attempt at a cockney British accent?) but luckily he doesn’t talk too often. I ultimately stuck with it because of the premise of the story interested me.

Whilst it had good story line overall, I do feel it dragged a bit at times and took me a while to get into it. There is the element of romance, action and unknowing that can get you sucked in, but for me, it didn’t quite hit the spot.

The reasoning I’m leaving this review is for the plot twist at the ending… What a huge disappointment. There is absolutely zero suggestion throughout the entire book of this twist, and whilst some might say that’s the point, it definitely felt like a tack on just to continue the plot. It was very confusing and did not seem to be considered at all. Everything we learnt and came to know of the main characters went straight down the drain for me. I was immediately no longer invested in the main characters as their entire demeanour was built on lies.

Despite this, it didn’t stop me from listening. I did enjoy listening to this audiobook and I wouldn’t say that it isn’t worth the read or listen. If you’re interested in action, romance and many plot twists then this series is definitely for you. As a one off for me, it’s fine, but I wouldn’t invest any time into the next books.

The story was AMAZING I was hooked right away and started the next book as soon as this one finished!
the performance was a bit odd and sounded a bit robotic but i upped my speed from 1.5x to 1.7x and it was fine then :)

Wow!!

I loved this book and all the characters in it. And what a twist at the end. Wasn’t expecting that! Not sure I’m happy about the lie and what’s really going on but guess it will be explained in the second book.

The story it’s self and the reveals

The story was done so well and the characters are likeable, the nuggets of information and the genuine shock of the reveals made it a very good read for me

Amazing - Hunger Games move over!

I loved this story, so much so that I downloaded book 2 and listened to it straight away. I've just downloaded book 3 and I can't wait to listen. I can really struggle to get into books. I LOVED the Hunger Games trilogy, so much so that I wish I still had them to read. The Prison Healer holds the same wish, I want to experience it for the first time again! It follows the Hunger Games slightly at the beginning, but then goes off on its own completely. The twists are fantastic. If you enjoyed the Hunger Games then give this a go. Same level of action/intrigue with new exciting characters.

A good YA story

A really decent YA book.

Always love a story where the main character is a healer, the amount of books I’ve read of this premise and yet, I don’t get bored. Think it’s because I like to convince myself that I would be a good healer in a fantasy world when, in reality, I actually would be terrible (I would forgot what plants are safe and which ones are harmful.)

I liked the plot of being in a prison and having to survive that and then having to get through these elemental trails where the person is meant to die.

The ending actually made me squeak out loud, as I totally didn’t see that coming. Some of the twists I saw coming but not all.

Looking forward to reading (or rather listening) to the next book.

<spoiler> So obviously Jaren is the love interest but I was quite gutted that Kiva didn’t fancy Naari, I thought they would make a great couple and the chemistry seemed stronger. </spoiler>

Interesting first book.

Good story, good universe around it. Plot "twists" easily guessed, still enjoyable. Too many repetitions, otherwise okay to follow.

lots of twists

it is a sweet story really and full of secrets....it's very much worth the read, the ending twist is very unexpected in my opinion, however previous reviews state otherwise. I didn't find it as predictable as other reviewers either, it is a very well thought out story TBF. I had to get the next book to see what happens next....as with Lynettes other series medoran chronicles which I've got the whole collection and love dearly. I feel this shall be another collection I adore. worth the read and worth the sequels.....excited to see what happens next!

Addictive YA

I normally love my books with a dash of spice but when YA books can grab my attention like this one did I don’t miss it. I am hooked. So intriguing with a different plot and intriguing characters. I predicted the twists but that doesn’t bother me as I think they were meant to be fairly obvious. Definitely will listen to the next one soon
