About this listen
Everyone who goes to Zallindov dies. Everyone, that is, except Kiva. Lynette Noni weaves a masterful and action-packed narrative that will take listeners on a roller coaster of twists, turns and thrills and sweep them up in a love story for the ages.
At Zalindov, the only person you can trust is yourself.
Seventeen-year-old Kiva Meridan is a survivor. For ten years, she has worked as the healer in the notorious death prison, Zalindov, making herself indispensable. Kept afloat by messages of hope from her family, Kiva has one goal and one goal only: stay alive.
Then one day the infamous Rebel Queen arrives at the prison on death's door and Kiva receives a new message: Don't let her die. We are coming.
The queen is sentenced to the Trial by Ordeal: a series of elemental challenges against the torments of air, fire, water and earth, assigned to only the most dangerous of criminals. Aware the sickly queen has little chance of making it through the Trials alive, Kiva volunteers to take her place. If she succeeds, both she and the queen will be granted their freedom.
But no one has ever survived.
And with an incurable plague sweeping Zalindov, a mysterious new inmate fighting for Kiva's heart, and a prison rebellion brewing, Kiva can't escape the terrible feeling that her trials have only just begun.
From bestselling Australian author Lynette Noni comes a masterful and action-packed YA fantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Sabaa Tahir.

"A marvelous and inventive storyteller." (Sarah J Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling Author)
Whilst it had good story line overall, I do feel it dragged a bit at times and took me a while to get into it. There is the element of romance, action and unknowing that can get you sucked in, but for me, it didn’t quite hit the spot.
The reasoning I’m leaving this review is for the plot twist at the ending… What a huge disappointment. There is absolutely zero suggestion throughout the entire book of this twist, and whilst some might say that’s the point, it definitely felt like a tack on just to continue the plot. It was very confusing and did not seem to be considered at all. Everything we learnt and came to know of the main characters went straight down the drain for me. I was immediately no longer invested in the main characters as their entire demeanour was built on lies.
Despite this, it didn’t stop me from listening. I did enjoy listening to this audiobook and I wouldn’t say that it isn’t worth the read or listen. If you’re interested in action, romance and many plot twists then this series is definitely for you. As a one off for me, it’s fine, but I wouldn’t invest any time into the next books.
No longer invested after the ending

Always love a story where the main character is a healer, the amount of books I’ve read of this premise and yet, I don’t get bored. Think it’s because I like to convince myself that I would be a good healer in a fantasy world when, in reality, I actually would be terrible (I would forgot what plants are safe and which ones are harmful.)
I liked the plot of being in a prison and having to survive that and then having to get through these elemental trails where the person is meant to die.
The ending actually made me squeak out loud, as I totally didn’t see that coming. Some of the twists I saw coming but not all.
Looking forward to reading (or rather listening) to the next book.
<spoiler> So obviously Jaren is the love interest but I was quite gutted that Kiva didn’t fancy Naari, I thought they would make a great couple and the chemistry seemed stronger. </spoiler>
A good YA story
