Summary
The Railway Detective faces his most dangerous adversary yet. It is 1852, and Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant Sergeant Victor Leeming are faced with their most complex and difficult case to date. As a train speeds over the Sankey Viaduct, a man is hurled from a carriage and plummets into the canal below. It later transpires that he has been stabbed to death. With no papers by which to identify the man, the detectives' investigation is hampered from the start.
Suspecting that the victim may have come from continental Europe, Colbeck and Leeming take the case to France where a new railway is being built by a British contractor. But in a new country the detectives face new problems. Anti-British feeling is rife and Colbeck and Leeming must put their own lives in danger to pick up the murderer's trail....

Foul Language
I love this series, but why the excess of foul language? Really do not feel that so much cursing was needed to portray the Irish workers. Other than that, a great story and one of my favorite narrators for Railway Detective series

appalling accents.
although the general quality of the reading was acceptable much of it was a crude caricature. worst of all the narrator gave 2 liverpool police officers BIRMINGHAM ACCENTS. it was excruciatingly.

Not the Railway Detective’s finest tale.
I read a few now ( not in chronological order) and have always enjoyed them. They have a very different style to most of my books. It’s simplistic and it’s good to have a change now and then - the literary equivalent of resting eyes on a calm colour. I can only think this was in the hands of a different editor. The foul language of the Irish navvies brought the whole story down with it’s liberal use. I don’t know whether it’s historically accurate or not but it completely jarred with the tones of the rest of the story and simply spoiled it all. Such a shame.

Good, gentle & entertaining historical mystery
Romance, intrigue, a tough of humour and an interesting, if slightly unbelievable, storyline. Worth listening to.

Shocked!
I have read the previous 2 railway detective books and really enjoyed them. But I have returned this book. It started well and I was really getting into the plot BUT, the language was totally shocking! I really didn’t expect to hear the C word and other bad language. I’ve read so many detective/mystery books over many years and of course it’s hard these days to have books without some swearing it seems to be part of every day life sadly. But I found this unacceptable! I just wish that I had read the previous comment before I had listened to it.

Completely spoiled by filthy language
This would have been a good enough story but was completely spoiled by the frequent use of the most filthy language. It was entirely unnecessary and could have been avoided through indirect references. Audible really needs to give books some kind of bad language alert or an f*** count!. I'm no prude but this was completely over the top.

Foul language
Appalling foul language that I’m sure the author didn’t write as there was no evidence in previous Railway Detective audio books. WHY DOESN’T AUDIBLE INDICATE FOUL LANGUAGE CONTENT BEFORE PURCHASING
It’s bad enough on TV without infiltrating my Audio books
