America's failure to acknowledge this trauma, let alone root it out, has allowed it to metastasise. This book was well written and narrated. It contains a lot of quotable sentences, which I liked. I have been observing the American turmoil from a distance, all the way from Finland. I find it harder and harder to find the America I fell in love years back as an exchange student. The thing I have never understood is the racism; it is just impossible to understand the rationale. Racism is inhuman and cruel. This book helped me finally understand where it all comes from in the USA. Unfortunately, I also understand now how long path America has towards equality. Thanks for the book!

I was looking forward to this book after listening to the last one. I wasn't expecting such a comprehensive history of the US since the civil war. It really brought it to life having the author reading it. Excellent

A superbly erudite but, nonetheless, chilling expose of the self-proclaimed “Land of the Free” - as someone who has visited the USA on many occasions and made many good friends there, it is refreshing to hear an honest and thoughtful alternative viewpoint which doesn’t rely on the usual cliched greatest country in the world rhetoric. This book should be compulsory reading for every single American who honestly believes their own warped and myopic view of their own fantasy greatness. Superb

I’ve listened to Mary Trumps first book, and really enjoyed it. I had hoped this one would be similar and she’d be analysing the last 4 years . It was a book for sociology and historical buffs. She knows her stuff you can’t take that away from her, but had a realised it was more a academic book I probably wouldn’t of bought it

Her first book was fascinating and hilarious in equal measures precisely because she had unique insight and justified axe to grind, backed up by a professional background which which was directly relevant. This book, whilst probably well intentioned, only serves to further the victimhood narrative of modern life. It tells one side of an extremely complex and ongoing story and provides no sign of thoughtful debate. Mary has taken the easy (and currently very profitable) route and not challenged much at all. There are very few insights of merit. You may as well read White Fragility (but don't do that, it's even worse).
